Kingdom Come: Deliverance II Review

Kingdom Come: Deliverance II is a rare breed in modern RPGs. It’s unapologetically grounded, deeply immersive, and painstakingly detailed. Where most games chase fantasy and spectacle, Deliverance II embraces realism—warts and all. The result is a rich, historically authentic experience that rewards patience, planning, and persistence.

Building on the cult success of its predecessor, Warhorse Studios has returned with a larger, more refined sequel that elevates nearly every aspect of the original—while still retaining the heart of what made the series unique.

Setting & Storytelling: Bohemia in Turmoil
Set in 15th-century Bohemia during the height of civil strife, the game continues the story of Henry of Skalitz, now a more seasoned warrior but still caught between nobility, faith, and the shifting politics of war. The narrative picks up where the first game left off and introduces higher stakes and a broader scope, with Henry seeking justice, vengeance, and identity in a land on the brink of collapse.

What’s most striking is the game’s commitment to historical authenticity. Every character, city, and village feels like it belongs in this world. Daily routines, period-accurate clothing, and even regional dialects ground the experience in realism. Side quests are particularly strong—often complex, morally ambiguous, and emotionally resonant. Many rival the main story in terms of writing and structure.

Gameplay: Precision Over Power
Combat in Deliverance II remains one of its defining features. It’s difficult, deliberate, and heavily reliant on timing, stamina, and positioning. A simplified directional input system improves upon the original’s sometimes clunky swordplay, while new weapons like crossbows and early firearms add tactical variety without breaking historical plausibility.

Outside of combat, players manage everything from hygiene and hunger to skill-based crafting systems such as alchemy, lockpicking, and blacksmithing. While this level of detail won’t be for everyone, it creates a remarkable sense of immersion for those willing to engage.

Stealth, thievery, and social manipulation are all viable paths, with outcomes shaped by how the player interacts with NPCs and the world. Reputation matters—dress poorly or act like a brute, and townspeople will treat you accordingly.

World Design: Bigger, Denser, More Alive
The game’s world spans two major regions: the lush Bohemian Paradise and the bustling, silver-mining city of Kutná Hora. Combined, the map is nearly twice the size of the original, yet it never feels empty. Forests teem with wildlife, towns are densely packed with activity, and each village feels handcrafted, not procedurally generated.

Dynamic weather and a full day-night cycle further add to the realism, affecting everything from visibility in stealth missions to shopkeeper schedules.

Visuals & Performance: A Technical Leap Forward
On PC, Deliverance II impresses. It supports DLSS, FSR, and ray tracing, and scales well across mid- to high-end hardware. Performance is generally stable, hovering around 80–120 FPS on recommended specs, though a few minor bugs—ranging from clipping issues to rare quest hiccups—remain post-launch.

Graphically, the game is stunning. Sunlight filters through forests with eerie beauty, faces are richly animated during dialogue, and battlefield vistas capture the chaos and grime of medieval warfare. Paired with an evocative, period-authentic soundtrack and meticulous sound design, the result is one of the most immersive worlds in recent RPG history.

Bugs, Balance & Learning Curve
No game of this scope launches perfectly, and Deliverance II is no exception. At launch, players reported some rough edges—missing voice lines, animation hiccups, and occasional quest blockers. However, a substantial post-launch patch (v1.2) addressed many of these concerns, improving AI, quest stability, and overall polish.

That said, this is not a pick-up-and-play RPG. The early hours are deliberately slow, the systems are complex, and the game does little hand-holding. Players unfamiliar with the first game or expecting a fast-paced fantasy romp may find the experience frustrating. But for those seeking depth and realism, Deliverance II offers unmatched immersion.

Post-Launch & Modding Potential
Warhorse has laid out a robust post-launch roadmap, including quality-of-life updates, hardcore difficulty modes, and several expansions. Community mod support, a strength of the first game, is already active, with players enhancing visuals, adjusting mechanics, and even creating new quests.

Final Verdict: 9/10
Kingdom Come: Deliverance II is a bold, uncompromising sequel. It refines the strengths of its predecessor—narrative depth, historical immersion, complex systems—while addressing many of its weaknesses. Though not without flaws, it’s an exceptional RPG experience for players willing to meet it on its own terms.

In an industry that increasingly leans into accessibility and mass appeal, Warhorse Studios has delivered something rare: a historically grounded epic that’s both intellectually demanding and emotionally rewarding.
