Now I've heard that DX10 will never be available for XP, but if it ever does become available then I wouldn't be interested in Vista until support for 64-bit really takes off.

I bought a copy of WinXP 64-bit and it was a huge disappointment. No Drivers really, no applications, no benefits at all really if you weren't some kind of developer. I'm sure 64-bit Vista is just the same. Hopefully Microsoft will actually try to promote it, since Intel now has 64-bit extensions. But as far as I'm concerned the real "next big thing" is a decent 64-bit OS.
Vista is built around DRM and I don't think it will ever work correctly or like xp.
I think the DRM is the problem with the drivers. Also the way they are forcing Hardware manufacturers to do what microsoft wants. M$ tells them what the future products will be and pushing this on manufacturers is bad. Kind of like they are now ruling with an iron fist. All the work they need to do to make drivers and it is all to profit microsoft. DRM doesn't do anything for consumers other then eat CPU and for manufacturers to comply they have to get everything approved by 3 media corporations to be allowed to put a driver on Vista. See vista will not unsigned drivers. There in no support and even M$ employees are jumping over board. They are getting macs. Basically Vista is less for more. Much much less. I think they also made some massive goofs at the core level.

This is an official M$ blog lol

I'm pissed about Vista and DRM is only one part. I did rant a bit but I guess I don't handle prolonged and intense stress as well as I once did. It's been some time since win 95 and I don't like reliving it. I got used to xp working. Very little works in Vista. Not even media center. I'd say that the M$ software works the worst for Vista. In fact Vista is getting worse. Each new driver works less. Sometimes I type and nothing shows up or I have to click 5 times on something that isn't even a double click button. It is hell. I may need to leave my computer software that XP pro magically shows up on it. I'd rather get a free copy from M$ for the bait and switch they pulled. I know I should of looked into Vista more.

the correct way to install Vista.

I've partially build my Vista computer (I still need drives to reassemble one of my WXP MCE boxes). And I'm not having any issues with it. I don't haven't seen any problems with ripping music, or movies. Then again, I don't use Microsoft software to do either of those things. Office runs no faster, or slower, than it did on XP. Pinnacle Studio 10 runs allot faster, though that is probably due to the new CPU. CDs burn just like they did in WinXP. And recent games like Oblivion, run the best I've ever seen. I can run even "older" games by using XP compatibility mode.

Also I have not had ANY Driver issues with Vista x64 (which is not what I expected). Granted I haven't bought a DX10 video card yet (I'm mulling over whether to buy an HD2900XT or not...). As far as I can tell either ATI, or Nvidia, cards will have drivers that are a "work in progress". And, Yes, I would expect to have some driver issues once I upgrade to a DX10 video card.

Still, as I've stated earlier, DX10 gaming is the primary reason I'm interested in Vista. The time I'm spending now is just to familiarize myself with how it works. Mind you, there are some things I don't particularly like; the UAC is the first thing that comes to mind, and the fact that it hides a whole bunch of directories on the HDD is a second. But I knew it would be different from XP, much like Win95 was different from Windows 3.11.

Now if some of you don't want to upgrade I can understand. Windows XP performance and stability are better now then they've ever been. And, at the moment, there aren't any games that really use DX10. Just like there isn't much software that is 64-bit, let alone being x64 native. You all have plenty of time to wait for Microsoft to improve Vista. Or you don't have to upgrade, and I'm sure that developers will still make software that will work with XP.

However, just like Windows 3, and Windows 95, and Windows ME, all "went away". So too Windows XP, will one day no longer be used. Perhaps by that time something better than Vista will be available. We'll just have to wait and see. In the meantime enjoy what you have and can afford, and don't worry about the "small stuff".

Not upgrading, it's a piece of sheit. Takes too much space, eats up your resourses and doesn't have support for many things yet. And btw, they are making dx10 for xp aswell.

I helped beta test Vista, so I got a free copy. I loaded Ultimate 64 on my system, dual booting with XP64. Once I got rid of all the crap, my only complaint now is I have to boot with "disable driver signature". There has been no signed promise drivers for Vista 64. I am able to use beta Vista ones tho. After 8 months, I'm finally getting used to the OS. I go into XP64 when I need to use my webcam or a few other things that Vista can't.
