I've had one of the orginal Audigys since soon after they were released. And just the other day a friend of mine bought me an Audigy SE, which is a newer low profile version without the firewire and gameport stuff. It's just what I wanted for one of my Shuttle boxens.

Oh and I also have a positively ancient Turtle Beach card that used the Aureal Vortex 8830 chip. I'll bet some of you don't remember that...

Well I'm using Sound Blaster Audigy 2 ( don't know which version : it has got IE1394 and lots of other connectors on board ).

I think tat Audigy SE has got EAX in software - sometime ago I was talking about that with Creative Labs Support for Europe - but don't remember which symbol was it :-/ . They've refreshed Audigy family but with products worse than old ones.
If you can remember SB Live! 5.1 had worse DACs than ordinary SB Live! . Of course it didn't do "a lot of diffrence" in the sound but Creative started to cut costs. Same thing with Audigy boards.

Aureal was the first company with real 3D sound. The've created A3D 1.0 with sound reflections processed in real time ( I think... ). The cards were great but Creative had better marketing and ads. Later they bought Aureal and killed A3D by putting it in EAX 2.0 and 3.0.

Thumbs up

Audigy best for games :-) I have Audigy ES (SB160, like usual Audigy, but without 1394) and 5.1 speakers. Best game 3DSound without CPU-overload.

Mainboard AC97 (Realtek) disabled 4ever ! :-)

I play less then when I was younger and had more time but at least now I can afford proper equipment I upgraded my Audigy 2 ZS to X-Fi and it sounds defenitely better, less cluttered. This is audible in games but also when playing stereo music on mu 5.1.there is audible difference. I guess CMSS has been worked on and improved.

Sound in Quake 4 (EAX5) and FEAR (EAX4) simply scares, it is sooo acoustically accurate it scares. I like EAX, It used to be just reverbs with Live cards, but it went a good few steps forward. Creative included Aureal's technology in their original EAX 1 and 2 that is de facto sound gaming minimum now, as it is supported in software by almost any soundcard because it was opened to public in 1999 I think. But EAX 3, 4 and latest 5 with Sensaura's Macro FX and 128 voice support still work only with Soundblasters Audigy and X-Fi.

It's due to our hearing that is quite forgiving about sounds missing so you do not actually realize things could sound better until you listen to them sounding actually better. It is not like with graphics where differences are obvious and easy to perceive. Hearing differences in sound is a skill people are losing.
