#31 | | Golden Member | It's not like I have issues with Vista (albeit the driver support is pure shit, so as an example, I have a VM XP installation just for my bluetooth dongle, go figure, it's simpler to set up that one then to have the dongle working on Vista) BUT
1. 7 loads faster for me
2. there is a number of games that stutter (exactly the same machine and settings) on Vista but work without a hitch on 7. To mane just a few GTAIV, Drakensang, Crysis and basically most new titles I have tried.
On max settings, 7 is just better for gaming.

I'm going to try again real soon. But I want a working drive image before I attempt it. (Am getting very weary of OS installs!) |

How come creative doesn't offer support for Vista/7?

See once before I had attempted to upgrade to Windows 7 (yes! that is being a bit lazy... but I didn't have time to do a clean install). Later I tried to do a clean install on an MSI board with a "rebranded" X-Fi card installed. It detected that card as a "Microsoft HD sound device" but then the microphone wouldn't work. The problem was that the driver disk for that device would even run on Windows 7. And since the device was not properly identified, the Creative webupdate couldn't see the card.
So the other day, after installing Vista x64 and doing some testing, I decided to give it another try at an "upgrade" of a basic install. This is with just drivers and a few other programs installed. My reasoning was that this might allow Windows 7 to see my CL X-Fi for what it was, and then perhaps the "webupdate" I got from Creative would work. ... And it did indeed work!
Now I do have a drive image to resort to should this install go south on me. But I can now proceed to install more of my programs and games, and see if I think Windows 7 is really that much better. ATM I've observed that it doesn't really start up that much faster (I timed it with a stopwatch...). Also, once everything really loads up it seems to be using the same amount of RAM. And the network transfer rates don't seem to be as good, but then it offered me a "new" set of drivers for the onboard NIC. So that part might change...
As for cosmetic changes, they don't really impress me that much! Part of it is that I don't use a computer the way Microsoft thinks "we all should". for instance, I am really very organized, and I don't need "Libraries" to help me find things. At the same time I don't need a "Search" function on my computer, unless I'm trying to chase down a particular OS file in the Windows directory. But I object to the OS "hiding" settings, directories and files. That Implies that I'm an Idiot and I'll mess things up... |

A lot of useless features that are easy to disable/circumvent.
In any case, I do find that 7 is a bit more responsive (comparing to a rather old Vista install), but I neither couldn't care less about the visual stiles. Like I said before, the major advantage (and arguably only) 7 has over clean 32 bit Vista Ultimate is game performance. With 64bit 7 I get smoother gameplay and that's a fact.

#36 | | Newbie | Why am I using WinXP32-bit?
Reason #2: This was my last 32-bit box.
Reason #1: It was getting really hard to find apps for Win98SE. |

I did try it however, and it's MUCH better than Vista, in fact I believe that 7 is what Vista should have been in the first place.
Now days, I pretty much use my PC only for gaming, since my main machine for pretty much anything else than gaming has become my Mac. OSX Leopard was not as good as what Apple would have liked it to be at release, but I believe that Snow Leopard will be a HUGE improvement, much like Vista to 7, especially since if you already own Leopard, a copy of Snow will only cost you 29$, fine by me .
But seriously, I really can't wait for 7 to come out so I can finally forget the pile of dog shit that Vista was.
