What's going to happen? I'll catch something and have to reformat my system drive? OMG ... LOL. Windows install takes 25 minutes, 15 more for drivers and about 30 minutes to get setup with software and settings (via registry tweaks it actually takes the time needed to browse to the .reg file). All of my pertinent data is stashed on a secondary partition and ready to from the moment my desktop reapers after the reinstall. The only times I actually lost some data was because my hand is sometimes quicker then me brain so I would shit+delete stuff I actually don't want to delete lol

5 years, and I haven't been infected once. So, let's say it happens once every 6 years. One mandatory reinstall over 6 years (I actually format at least 4 times a year) stacked against lost performance, reinstalls, constant updates and upgrades, plus 50$ (or whatever) per year for licenses. And with all that, you can't be sure what that proggie is actually doing on your machine nor can you be 100% positive you're secure as there is always some new and aggressive virus/trojan/spyware/whatever crap.

Like I said, your brain is the most effective security software out there.

Please, don't worry about me. Each of us has it's own way of feeling secure, just because it says I'm a n00b in my profile, it doesn't necessarily mean that I actually am one.

well if you dont use your pc for anything then its fine but if you actually do work on it then if you have to format your drive and you loose all your work then yoru screwed

and since your experience with virii is obviously limited, the nastier ones can cause irepairable hardware damage, years ago a buddy of mine got one that cranked the vcore of his cpu up and friendit 'poof' re-installing windows isnt gonna fix that

so going back to your 'best way to protect your system is by using your brain' comment, your really not using it if your not running a good anti virus.

I do have to agree about not using virus/firewalls etc. isnt the smartest move.

Even if they use 40MBs of system ram, when you have 2-4GBs, it really is inconsequential. Also now everyone has multi-core systems, again even if they use 2-5% processing power at times, again it isn't even noticable. However they do work, and there are hundreds of virus's/trojans etc. that can exploit all the holes Microsoft leave in your O.S.

I would recommend, Kaspersky as one of the strongest, and most updated internet security suite. I would also recommend Bit defender more for people who like gaming, it is easier on the system. I would definitely not recommend norton, because it slowed down my computer a lot, and did not provide the best protection, but if a hacker wants to get in your computer they will any way, just like some cases where people hack government computers.

Well there is a difference between the kind of attacks a random nobody receives across the internet to the kind a government receives. Most "attacks" on home PCs come from computer programs, virus's worms etc. Not an individual targetting your computer specifically. And that is where firewalls, and antivirus comes in. If it is something attacking your computer, it is 99% of the time attacking 101 other computers, so it gets identified and added to your AV's recognition.

OK, good to hear back from you. It's also nice to see how you know all these things about me.

If I'm NOT browsing pron sites, using p2po clients nor opening suspicious emails, how the fuck am I supposes to get this vcore cranking virus?

Also, a smart individual will use a work PC ONLY for work and not dl porn, warez and whatnot on it. There is not one AV software that will block everything, so yes, you STILL have to use your brain form time to time.

This is what you get when you get into AV fanboy discussions. Let's just agree that we disagree and that each of us uses a solution the better fits his needs.

I think if you have a firewall, either the one in Windows or a hardware one like on most hubs, then I would agree with the above, without a firewall however then it depends entirely on Microsoft not to have loopholes in their latest updates that can be used to inject a program onto your machine.

there is malware out there that uses security holes in the OS to spread and doesn't need user intervention
