#21 | | Site Staff | Well, here is my non-BS assessment on this subject. I do not trust most of the reviews because I am already familiar with the ‘public relations’ game. Since most of the reviewers get samples from the manufacturer for their reviews, then they are forced to be ‘nice’. Otherwise, they will lose samples support. Most of the press just care about their ‘business’, and they don’t care to write a few positive words in their reviews just to promote themselves to get more samples.
Another case is when reviewers have close relations with manufacturers, it makes it look bad. I will try not to mention names, but I will say that I do not trust most of the US press. For example, every day you see another positive headline about Apple’s products (iPhone/iPod) on US sites, iPod is a just a normal media player, iPhone is just another cellular phone, and there are many alternatives (and many better) out there, but Apple is getting so much hype, especially in the US press, you should ask the US press why.
If you want another example, you can look at the X-Fi reviews! Everyone said good stuff about it, but no one mentioned SCP issues, except of me. That shows you how unreliable most of the reviews are.
Another case is Graphic card reviews, most of the game benchmarks are sponsored by Nvidia/ATI and optimized by their software/cheatware. I would use some unknown games to make sure Nvidia/ATI are not cheating. Therefore, if you ask me, I do not trust anyone but myself, and some other people that I know, and trust them. However, basically, I do not trust reviews, especially US sites who have close relations and private deals with PR agents.
But on the other hand, I'm being punished for being honest: Asus (Voltage story), AMD (Viral Marketing story), Nvidia (many stories), Creative Labs (X-Fi SCP story) and some more companies are punishing me for saying the truth and for being honest, so you have to understand the other sites for being 'nice' after all.

Always hit the manufacturer's site for white papers, manuals, etc, any info i can go over before deciding to buy anything. |

For example you won't know a headset is flimsy and uncomfortable just by reading specs. Reviews and customer comments are taken with a pinch of salt but such findings are often overwhelmingly stated.
