No, depends on OS and hardware...and what you do with your PC. I do CG work besides gaming, Complex scenes/renders can chew up 4GB in a heartbeat.

Currently 4GB, adding 2 more sticks (2x 2GB) in a few weeks for 8GB total.

Perhaps a better GPU would help.

A purpose designed gpu for rendering applications runs into the 1k+ range see here and doesn't do well with other tasks. Matrox is the only cheaper manufacturer I've seen and it doesn't wholly support ray tracing, more into medical imaging >.> . Gelato for the nVidia gpu's helps, but only with Maya and 3d Studio Max. Doesn't do a thing for Cinema 4D my prefered work tool.

Mayhap you can shell out a couple thousand to boost render speeds...i'd rather get more ram, cheaper by far.

RAM+CPU are extremely important factors for rendering performance.

Definitely. During my basic rendering course in high school, we had P4s + 845 IGPs. TrueSpace 3 had trouble. Gives you an idea.

I have 4 GB installed , and can use all 4GB since I'm running Windows Server 2003 32bit.
Still as I'm running a 32bit OS , a single userspace application can only use 2GB maximum.
The OS takes up some memory too , but still a lot of memory was going unused.
So I got eboostr and set it to use 1GB system memory as cache .. loading programs and games is now VERY fast.
I still have some memory left that is not being used , so I'm thinking about installing a ramdisk and configuring windows to put the temporary files on it - it should speed things up further.

Yeah ramdisks absolutely rock (regardless of the OS you use). As long as you mind the drawbacks (reliability being one) that is.
