Now it seems that I'd be better off with a cheap 8800GTX (yes it will cost more - but it has the performance to back up the price). The real "sweet spot" might be the 8800GTS/640. But I was in the market for the one best card I could buy. All I know is that the 8800 Ultra is ridiculous, and a terrible value.
Somehow I think AMD's management of ATI, is largely to blame for the R600's failure to measure up. Once this architecture is revised and moves to a 65nm fab , things may change for the better. Still I will not buy one of these HD2900XT cards. I'll stick with my X1900XT, or possibly consider an HD2600XT (which is 65nm fab), for my second system. (Actually I was thinking of sticking with XP MCE 2005 for that second system so there's no point going past the X1900.) Good Job! AMD |

Comparisons of the 640MB card with the 320MB card show that when AA is turned on, or higher resolutions are used, the 640 works better. Additionally, I intend to upgrade to a 24" LCD soon, so that is another factor. That means that I'll be using a native resolution of 1920x1200 and the extra memory will be required.
Of course I also got an EVGA card so, in 90 days, I can "upgrade" it to a GTX if I decide it's needed. And I ordered it from ZipZoomFly, who have a MIR and a low price. So the total cost will be about $332. |

There are at least 2, that I know of, 22" wide-screen LCDs with a 2ms response time. One is the Asus MW221U and the other is the Samsung 226BW. Both of those cost about $335, with shipping.
However, I like my current setup, just not for Vista. Because one of the Viewsonics has no Vista drivers. Since there isn't a regular aspect ratio 19-21" LCD to go with the Asus, so I would to get Samsung displays.
Or, I can go, like I planned and replace Viewsonics with a pair of NECs. One of which would be a 24". It's just that I'm spending money like mad here... and the price of a 24" would cover the cost of the 2 Samsungs. And leave a bit to get a Razor mouse for my gaming rig. That's the real reason why I paired down to a 640MB GTS. That's all I should need for 19-20" regular aspect ratio display.
We'll see how the Security job does in the next few months. At the moment we're in a lull, but if it picks back up, I can easilly afford a 24" and the upgrade to a GTX. (Just have less time to "play" - 12hr shifts 5-7 days a week can be rough but it pays well.) |

This is what modified drivers are for though . |
