#41 | | Newbie | I own a lot of both types, but... I own both ATI chips, high, medium and low market. And, I own a lot of nVidia chips, also high, medium and low. Head to head, there really is very little difference. Other than the ATI chips can do the Folding@home trick and the nVidia's can't. But I chose ATI because they seem like a much much better company, even after the AMD mix in.
I see it like this: When I used to work on heavy mid-range computer system for a travel company, we had a few million dollar SUN machines. Those machine used ATI chips for their video. I mean, if ATI is good enough for a million dollar machine, well then they must have something going for them.
ATI chips over this years have seemed much smarter to me too. ATI chips running at lower clocks can usually out perform nVidia chips, even and expecially with all the eye-candy turned on. To me, eye candy is better than speed anyway.
Plus, if nVidia will not stop whoring them selves out. Darn, if they'd spend 1/2 the money they do on advertizing and put it into drivers or research, what would they be able to produce? Think about it. nVidia has marketed themselves raw. Their logo is on just about every game box on the shelves these days. I don't see that as a plus to nVidia. They are throwing their money in the wrong place. This also raises the cost of their hardware considerably. It's not good for the consumer in any way, shape or form.
I'd still like to see both companies work harder on making the video look better. I still think 3DFx had better FSAA that even the latest hardware on the market by both. Though ATI's super FSAA at 14X with Crossfire must be seen to be appreciated. Oh well. |

#42 | | Newbie | Here's proof of nVidia's poor business abilities. Here's an outake from the install of the latest NGO drivers:
-------------------------
Recently, Nvidia has been antagonizing our site (including legal threats) and they are trying to "drive us out of business" by putting unwarranted pressure on us because we are not participating in their marketing plans. Nvidia is always trying to gain a small amount of control over hardware sites. However, if these sites will not play by their rules they may try to put them out of business. Because of this undue high pressure, we’ve decided to show our resistance and inform our readers/users about these acts.
If you do appreciate our work and our projects, you can aid us against Nvidia’s pressure by showing your support on our forums and site ( http://www.ngohq.com). With your support, Nvidia will have to think twice before they take any action, and reconsider their treatment towards NGOHQ.com.
---------------------------
If that doesn't tell you enough about nVidia's bad business practices, I'm not sure what will. Makes me glad to support ATI. |

But I didn't know that they were continueing their harrassment! I've also heard that they pay people to act as guerilla marketing agents and sign up with sites like this to spread sh!t in the forums... They really have NO Class whatsoever.
But truthfully they screw up on the Hardware side of thiings on a regular basis. A couple of years ago, when they came out with the 6800 series, certain "features" didn't work right. They never fixed anything. Now their 8800GTX series is borked and seems to have problems with Vista. True, this may be limited to only some of their GPUs, but that doesn't mean they should try to ignore the problems and Cover Things Up.
I've been workin like a dog lately, so I could afford some new gear. But I am NOT buying any of nVidia's crap, no video cards, no motherboards, Nothing. Because its not allways just nVidia's "drivers" that have problems. Their engineering isn't all that great either.
Sadly ATI seems to be struggling... I considered buying and Athlon 6000+, just because the price is SOOOO low, but there isn't that many good motherboards that don't use nVidia chipsets. So later today I'll probably buy an Intel Quad Core with an Intel chipset board. (It really feels strange moving back to Intel after all these years... ) |
