Question buying a new system - new cpu?

hey all,

Im buying a new pc for games performance/dx10 and im wondering if its worth getting a new cpu which would mean switching to ddr2.

I have in total around £1500 excluding a 22inch lcd which is already pre-ordered.
Im waiting for the r600 before i buy the system, 8800gtx just wouldn't cut it XD

Anyway, an extreme would be to get a e6700 quadcore or a e6800 but id only consider it
if i'd notice the performance atall this year especially on the directx10 games.

my current specs:

6600gt
OCZ platinum 1gb (ddr1)
512mb value ram
500w psu
3700+ san diego

good idea to wait for the r600 to come out, see what ATI has to offer (as the 8000 series Nvidia will have to come down in price too.)

so far, the quad core is not being used to it's full potential, but if your main goal is to get the best, then go for a Q6600, which is 150 US dollars less then the extreme QX6700

yes you would have to switch to DDR2, but that is the nature of the beast, and if you play your cards right, you can get some nice ram for a decent price.

to upgrade like that, you will have to get a new motherboard also. a good socket T (775) will get you far, but make sure it is compatible with the core 2's.

how about that, 2 mixed replies XD, im where i started

im only guessing but the barcelona will be around the same price as the 6800? do you know the release date btw?

kYdizzle, will the 6700 make a performance diffrence from the 6600 and would quad be more future proof? (wouldn't want to have to buy anoter MB for quad lateron down the line)

thanks for your comments

the only difference between the QX6700 and the Q6600 is the QX6700 has 2.66 GHz cores, and an unlocked multiplier. the Q6600 runs at 2.4 GHz. if you want to overclock it will make up the difference.

Well by barcelona I acutally meant K10 (Incorrectly known as K8L a while ago). Q2 2007. The fact that AMD is releasing a core they have been working on for 3 years is very exciting. If all goes well (and so far it has been ahead/on schedule!) you can get the whole DAAMIT treatment (cpu/chipset/gpu) for one killer rig that smokes the competition and isn't by a greedy evil monopoly that only open sourced the drivers for its intergrated video because they sucked.

Some good suggestions and SanAndreas depending on the time frame I also noted you were thinking of updating your MB down the road. Gen posted an article on Submit News(Members) on DDR3 and thought that might be a mention as well.
<<HERE>>

Reason I mention this is Chaos mentioned it would require a new MB due to the pin configuration of that new ram ... just food for thought

Happy building
