i thought that 165 has more overclocking headroom.

It does, but he mentioned that there probably won't be overclocking of the system. If any, it will be minimal.

The extra cache of the opteron will make a diffrence in all the applications you mentioned you will be using your rig for. In order to get the opty up to 2.7, like you mentioned, you gotta find optys with a 0530 or 0550 steppings(these are getting hard to find now). IF I were you Id pick up the opty.

Good point, interestingly the X2 has 64k more L1 cache on each core though, I wonder what the difference actually is??
Hmm, according to the graph provided in the first post, the X2 performs better at stock speeds..

It may be 200MHz slow but is has a 1x 1MB cache and the 3800+ has a 2x 512KB cache. The price difference is small so its worth it to get the 165 as it OC's quite well. If you are gonna OC'd the hell out of you CPU I would go for the 165 but if not stick with your 3800+.

As I'm planning a major upgrade soon, from "NF2 Epox 8RDA3+ with Barton 2500+" to "NF4-Based system) I was thinking seriously about the Opty 165, but then I've changed my mind and decided to go for the X2 3800+.

I guess that if one considers himself an extreme overclocker, he should go for the Opty 165 (or even 170). I used to be an overclocking enthuseist, but these days are over . I guess I'll buy a nice X2 3800+ and "only" give it a "mild" overclocking (from 2Ghz stock to 2.4-2.5GHz).

So...I vote for X2 3800+!!!

Actually zachig you might be able to push the 3800+ alittle more some people can get to 2.6-2.8Ghz with easy though increasing vcore is required.

The Opteron may have more L2 cache, but the X2 has more L1 cache. With the 200mhz clock boost, that's why it outperforms the Opteron at stock speeds. If you're not going to be overclocking, or it's going to be mild than don't spend the extra money and stick with the X2.

Great choice everyone ! Let us know how it all works out!

Well where I buy my hardware the 170 is only $10 more so I would go with it and Oc'ed the hell out of it.
