#1 | | Guest | Sempron 64 3400+ or Athlon 64 3000+? i fried my Athlon XP 2500+ 3 days ago and currently im using my OLD pentium3 1.2Ghz 256mb system. and i cant take it anymore! i must upgrade NOW!! ive been looking online for a good upgrade and i think i found one. im going to buy a DFI LanpartyUT NF3 250GB motherboard. and YES i know tha this is a socket 754 mobo and its getting old. i dont care i dont have the cash for a socket 939 and cpu combo. and this board looks very promising. also the fact that just a dew weeks ago i upgraded my AGP card and i really dont want to get a PCI-E mobo because of that. so im stuck with socket 754 and i dont mind. what i DONT know is if i should go for an Athlon 64 3000+ or a Sempron 64 3400+ they are both priced the same. and also same clocks.(2GHz) only Athlon 64 has 512KB of L2 cache while the Sempron has only 256KB. PLZ help i need to escape this old PC now!! | |

With the clocks being the same, obviously the A64 is going to run better (overall) than the sempron, because it has 2x the cache memory. Also note that cache memory is significantly faster than any kind of DDR / DDR2 memory as well. Honestly, having 2x the cache memory has the potential to improve performance of the CPU by over 4x!
We are pretty much looking at the Intel Celeron VS Intel PentiumIV. It is the EXACT same scenario, but the Celeron has 128kb cache, and the P4 has 512kb cache. Look carefully at the A64 3500+ and 3700+, they run at the same clock speed, the only difference is that the 3500+ has 512kb cache and the 3700+ has 1MB cache.
Anyways, I think you have your answer. Defintely, go with the Athlon64 3000+!

#8 | | Advanced Newbie | DFI does make a S939 that has AGP. They are great OC'ers and the prices aren't all that bad either. That way you can use dual channel ram and all the features of the latest CPU's. http://us.dfi.com.tw/Product/xx_prod...YPE=LP&SITE=NA

#9 | | Dedicated Member | For the same price I would go with the 3000+. Sempron aren't really great for games but the 3000+ would do you better because of the larger cache.

#10 | | Advanced Member | I would definitely go with the 3000+. I'm absolutely sure that it will perform better than the Sempron 3400+. For gaming, it is 100% better than the Sempron. Oh...and you can always give it a light overclock so it will easily outperform the Sempron.
GOOD LUCK. |
