Default Thermal Paste

Bought new AMD just today, and theres this kinda inversed-bump in it, green recycled paper amd package thing was almost ripped in 2 in the box...dont know wtf happened...the diametre of the bump is a about 1 to 2 millimetres of diametre...should i apply it on the CPU? or go straight back to the shop and get a replacement? Tho it's not deep at all...

Reapply and make sure you are using a good thermal paste like Arctic Silver 5

CPU: CP what?
GPU: Not sure i have one...
M/B: I prefer my own...
RAM: It's working fine thks
PSU: Piece of sh..unit?

If you do decide to re-apply thermal paste dont forget to wipe clean the cooler of the factory thermal pad amd uses. The apply a very thin layer of thermal paste on the cpu and install the hsf.

besides using artic silver 5, you can lap the heatsink if you want to really boost cooling

lapping is only guaranteed to get an extra 1-2c, the best method is to use a high quality silver or gold based heat compound

It probably helps more than you think,
For example aluminum forms an oxidation layer called alumina,
and copper similarly oxidizes, ala statue of liberty
lapping would remove the layer that is on your thermal conduction surface area

every little bit helps, if you really want to , you can lap the IHS on the cpu,
Ive seen it done, but I wouldnt risk damaging the processor.

Plus I did not say to stop using thermal compound.
Don't flame what you do not understand.

i didn't flame....

if i had flamed you then, regen would've banned me

i think you need to learn the difference between a flame and logical disagreeal

if you apply the compound correctly, you don't need to lap the base of the heatsink as the grease is spread out onto the base and fills any pores in the sink, thus allowing a even heat dispersing space

also for reference

dot some compound on the heatsink, then rub it into the heatsink with a tissue or something, untill the base of the heatsink is clear of the compound

you'll notice that the base is now off colour from the rest of the heatsink (if its copper) this just means that the compound is properly spread out through the base and will allow maximum heat disappation
