CPU: Intel E6700 @ 3.2 GHz
GPU: HD 4770 512 GDDR5
M/B: MSI P45 Neo F (Rev. 1)
RAM: 8 GB Dual Channel DDR2
PSU: 1000W Ultra X3
Default

One of the main things I was looking at E6700 vs. E8400 is that the E8400 has double the cache memory and is clocked at 3.0 Ghz default. I would think that would translate is a better overclock than the others that default to 2.66 Ghz.

I also don't really see the advantage [at the present time] of a quad core over the Core2 versions.

well, I did oc the e8400 to 4ghz at save voltage under titan fenrir, which is 40bucks in my country.. also it has mounting things for i7, which is kinda future proof
The temps are very good, 55C at full load, could oc more, but dont want to mess with higher voltage.

I picked up that MSI board, got it installed and have put XP Pro and W7 RC x64 on it. I'll likely get around to restoring Vista tomorrow night sometime.

Resurrecting this thread.

In our state we have 2 weekends per year when there are no taxes added to certain purchases. This coming weekend is one of those weekends. For clothing, school supplies, and certain electronics, e.g. computers, there will be no tax added.

I'm really not in the position at this time to do a full system upgrade. But, do you guys think it would be wise to replace my current CPU: E6700 C2D with a Quad Core? I can get one with better speed and larger cache memory for $170 USD.

http://www.microcenter.com/single_pr...uct_id=0299412

It's the only real 'upgrade' I would consider at this time anyway.

Is it worth it?

Keep in mind that, come October, I'll plan to get the official Windows 7 64-bit OS.

CPU: Q9550 @ 3.2ghz
GPU: 4870X2 with 9800GTX+
M/B: DX48BT2
RAM: 8 gb Corsair XM3 DDR3
PSU: Corsair 1000HX

Q9550 is a great processor. With a good cooler easily overclockable. And being a quad with Win7 on the way and other software that will be more dependent on multi-threads it should last you awhile.

This really is my line of thought, too. The e6700 is over 3 years old now. Most of the rest of my system is fairly new....bought just this year.

And, I have a ZeroTherm cooler which keeps the processor very nice and comfy.

well I got e8400, but the only option of upgrading cpu I see q9550, even thinking of going for it myself.. If I were u, I would grab it, but thats imho..
