Unixlord, I personally remember being impressed when I first saw that MSI board. And I do like the EFI, though I suspect it may have some security issues. I also like the idea of an advanced CPU identification facility in the BIOS. What I can't get too excited about is the Core i7. It has too many power saving features, and I am still pissed with Intel over my last motherboard with one of their chipsets. Where no matter what I did in BIOS, the frickin board would undervolt my memory to 1.75v (This was an Asus P5E - so I'm talking about the X38 chipset...). To my knowledge all chipsets from Intel do the same thing. So with the Core i7 now having it's memory controller "on-board" I know it will do the same thing. I also know that Intel does not like people overclocking their stuff. They never have!

I'm hoping AM3 will be joined by an improved south-bridge. Then I'll migrate back to AMD, and accept the "performance deficit" of the Phenom IIs. Which I'll Overclock and pair with some 4850s in Crossfire. I realize that everyone loves the adage of "you get what you pay for...", but sometimes you don't.

(Rant OFF!)

Since AM3s and 45nm AM2 Phenoms are supposed to be backward compatible with AM2, and if ASUS decides to make a BIOS that supports the new CPUs for my M2A-VM, then I will definitely go for that. I wouldn't mind changing my motherboard, but If there's a possibility to do otherwise, great.

If I had an AM2 board that I liked I would do the same. But there will only be a very short run of the new AM2 processors. And while the pinouts might not change (not sure on that...), the motherboards will need to change for AM3 processors. AFAIK you can't just stick DDR3 in a DDR2 slot.

And since price and availability of DDR3 is becoming mainstream. I can't see the myself buying into AM2. The selection of memory and processors will be better for AM3.

Yeah, I guess you're right about that. I think I'll just tough it out until I can't play any games at a resolution higher than 800x600 Just joking. I'll just wait 'till the AM3's will come out then go for the whole CPU + MB + RAM package.

A dream pc can only last so long so I think it is better to save your money a little and use it on something more useful. You can have a wonderful computer but can't go to over board, I only payed $826 for my system, and it is good enough.

This is kind of old but .....

This will be a generalized post because im not up to date with the current hardware names/models ....

A dual CPU core i7 application. Probably a server motherboard with plenty of PCI-E 2.0 slots.
16gigs of the highest running DDR3 memory
2 SCISI disk ran in raid 0 with a 3rd for backing up data.
2 nvidia GTX295s (I believe these are the dual GPU models right?) ran in SLI
1000ish W PSU, probably corsair. With a secondary dedicated PSU for the gfx cards.
Water cooled
