CPU: Phenom II x3 720 @ 3.4
GPU: Radeon HD4870 OC
M/B: MSI 790FX-GD70
RAM: OCZ DDR3 4gb
PSU: OCZ 700w
Default q6600 or e8500

Ok so ive been looking at these two processors and am totaly drawn, they are both pretty much the exact same price, they are both good over clockers, the quad core solution is superior at rendering and some applications buat thats about it, from what ive been able to gather the e8500 outperforms the q6600 in more cases then not, the 8500 has better gaming performence, better perofrmence with some tasks (like filtering in photoshop), but the q6600 is obviously quad core, would be handy when havok comes out to have a core to dedicate to physics.

Like I said, I am completly drawn, would appriciate some opinions from you guys

I have not played with the e8500 but the Q6600 has worked well for me now for a few months

Like I said, since you do rendering work the Q6600 is the right cpu for you (at that price range). I had to make a similar decision and went wolfdale because the lower temps, higher oc headroom and sheer single threaded muscle appealed to me. But if you're serious about rendering then either Q6600 or Q9300 will do.

Just remember there is no such thing as future proof and never has been.

There's only half a multiplier's difference between E8400 and E8500. You could go E8400+aftermarket cooling and by the time you really need quads, the price of 45nm yorkfields will have dropped.

I am using a Q6600, it over clocks really well , having 2 extra cores is a bonus havent seen any program/game that take advantage of all 4 cores till now but I am sure it would come in handy later.

But I would have to agree with Unix above , you can go for e8500 and maybe later pickup the 45nm when the occasion calls for it.

e8500 would have better performance in games than the Q6600

Both not worthwhile. Go for a Phenom 9950 BE that is, if TDP doesn't matter to you.

naw the 9950 is pretty much as fast as the q6600 @ stock but cant oc nearly as well, as much as i like amd, phenom is trash and they should have scraped it when the first release was a flop and made something decent.
