CPU: core2 xtreme quad 2.93
GPU: Geforce 8800 GTS 320mb
M/B: Asus p5n
RAM: 2 gb ddr 800mhz
PSU: thermaltake 700watt
Default My core2 xtreme quad a waste of $$??

I'm reading some new reviews and such of my processor, and some of it seems to be really disheartening, because at the time that I purchased my rig, the reviews and articles seemed to be all singing its praises. Among some of the things I've heard is that Windows cannot manage 4 cores correctly, no programs take advantage of 4 cores, the cores do not transmit data between each other well, among other criticisms. Does anyone else use this processor? Should I have just gone for the c2e dual core?

I don’t know what the biased reviews say, but Quad Core processors are suitable for server-use, not home-use. If you wish to run a Corporate server with many services, then Quad Core CPU and Linux would be the best choice. For a gaming and home use single/dual core should be more then enough. You will not notice any difference in most games and in a Desktop PC. I think you should use A Dual Core CPU, unless you’re planning to run a heavy-crowded server with many services such as Exchange, web server and more services that require processing power.

Thanks for the quick reply, do you think I should try to sell the quad processor in favor of a dualcore? I'm not sure whether to stick with this until something better comes out, or to try and find a computer shop that'll swap them out and give me some credit for the quad. It kinda sucks that I must have just listened to hype and wasted my long-saved money for a processor that I thought would be the centerpiece of a perfect rig, but doesn't even help much for what I like to do(mostly gaming). I'm wondering if the X6800 or something else would be better.

Depends on what you're doing with it. If you're gaming you would be twice as better off with a dual core and a GTX. I bet that quadcore compiles s**t like crazy. Have you compiled the Linux kernel with that yet?

If it will help you to sleep better, then sell it and get X6800 instead. The X6800 is faster in games by only 1%-6%. Nothing critical and your CPU has a lot of processing power for applications. If you wish to get some money and more performance in games, then go for it.

Nah, can't say I have. I'm a lowly windows nub. I wonder if I could find someone to trade me an x6800 conroe for it. Most of my games run smooth as silk with max graphics settings, but STALKER gives me problems. Is there by any chance a new conroe dual core extreme out? Might as well save and get the best.. Or maybe again, I should upgrade my card to a GTX or ultra, or get another GTS for SLI formation like I've been considering.. I'm far from rich and I saved for years to get this rig, so I can only afford to do one major improvement, not a total overhaul.

Don’t wait for things to come out. Innovation is way too fast and its something we can’t control. Enjoy today because you can never know what will happen tomorrow. If you wish to sell something, do it fast before the price drops.

appreciate the replies, guess I gotta think on this one. Too bad I didn't talk to people here before I bought my rig.
