Originally Posted by AP A 75-year-old widow in Saudi Arabia has been sentenced to 40 lashes and four months in jail for mingling with two young men who are not close relatives, drawing new criticism for the kingdom's ultraconservative religious police and judiciary.
The woman's lawyer told The Associated Press on Monday that he would appeal the verdict against Khamisa Sawadi, who is Syrian but was married to a Saudi. The attorney, Abdel Rahman al-Lahem, said the verdict issued March 3 also demands that Sawadi be deported after serving her sentence.
He said his client, who is not serving her sentence yet, was not speaking with the media, and he declined to provide more details about the case.
The newspaper Al-Watan said the woman met with the two 24-year-old men last April after she asked them to bring her five loaves of bread at her home in al-Chamil, a city north of the capital, Riyadh.
Al-Watan identified one man as Fahd al-Anzi, the nephew of Sawadi's late husband, and the other as his friend and business partner Hadiyan bin Zein. It said they were arrested by the religious police after delivering the bread. The men also were convicted and sentenced to lashes and prison. | I hope they will get their ass kicked by the US of A. |

"""March 9, 2007 the UN wrapped up its annual session of the UN Commission on the Status of Women. Guess where they found a violation of women's rights? The UN's lead body charged with promoting and protecting women's rights identifies only one state as violating the rights of women in the world today – Israel.(Violating the rights of Palestinian women.)""" |

There are so many countries with so hardcore religion...and USA isn't guardian or savior. Everything they've done was due a direct or indirect threat to the security. Afghanistan - WTC, Iraq - ballistic missiles - which were not there muehehhe :P (well CIA...where did you get such informations anyway? ). It is humorous - the USA supported Afghanistan in fight with USSR And after few years they became victims of Osama Bin Laden Well, how the country can go well, when... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fJuNgBkloFE |

Coming from a small island without being exposed to many religions and radical laws, I can say that extreme type of punishments such as slashing because of little things, like mingling is just plain stupid, and come on, a 75 year old woman? What kind of fcked up minds do they have? I even read somewhere that one tourist was sentenced to jail for several months over there because he was "perfoming sexual acts WITH the sand on the beach", when all he was doing was pushups. |

I think a more accurate statement would be...
"At least they are helping theirselves"
If they had any interest beyond oil and gas pipes, they would also be in a lot of African countries atm.
This has nothing to do with "helping". Get some perspective. |

| Oh hell...USA wouldn't join WWII if The Axis wasn't a threat for them. What do you mean by saying 'unlike UN'? You know, UN didn't approve invasion on Iraq because there were NONE evidence of ballistic weapon.
And it WAS an invasion you know... You know why USA doesn't invade North Korea? Because whole country is mined and well armed and all they can do against them is launch a nuke (hell, those Koreans probably already have one too - so it's stalemate ). USA invaded Iraq because it was virtually DEFENSELESS! Low cost victory. Nothing else.
@lyla - true, but, hell, most Europeans knows where USA lies, where Australia lies and where - the hell - is Middle East! |

Then clip them all together. There are plenty of Americans that are not like that, but they are a very insular culture, part of being fairly self-sufficient and having oceans between them and most of the rest of the world. |
