The greeks attacked first.
Quoting ghazi:read this article by Ephraim Lytle, assistant professor of hellenistic history at the University of Toronto. Also refer to Herodotus to see some of the reasons behind Persia's invasion of Greece, including the clear (though understated by Herodotus) fact that Greece attacked the Persian city of Sardis and killed thousands of trapped civilians, as well as the execution of Persian heralds by the Greeks, and the regular acts of Greek piracy on Persian ships. The invasion of Greece was not simply an unprovoked act of greed.

The fact remains that the greeks, romans, crabs, Egyptians kept masses of slaves while the Persians did not. They never enjoyed watching poor slaves being ripped apart by dogs while eating sweets like the romans and it was Cyrus the great that freed (among others) the Jews from Mesopotamia and let them continue with their own religion.
If you think that I will accept such trash to become commonplace you are mistaken. If the above text burns you eyes with anti-Persian hatred stare at it until they melt.
ps: and stop using the words Persian and Iranian interchangeably, they do not have the exact same meaning.

Just to compare, I nominate Akira Kurosawa's Ran. But, matter-of-factingly, we cannot expect much more from where it came from. And do not forget the "300: March to glory", the videogame. And the pompoms. And the brand new masks of Xerxes the ...? And the All krispies 300' Kellog's special. And so on.

Default Relax dude

unixlord, I know this is important for you, but you really have to relax a bit. Take a deep breath. I find it really interesting that you've made this your personal mission, but hey, whatever makes you happy.

If the above text burns you eyes with anti-Persian hatred stare at it until they melt.
  • Dude – you need a girlfriend (or boyfriend) whatever floats your boat. Your comment makes me laugh since I'm so far removed from how you feel. :-)

Here's what I have to say to your reply: Darius (Xerxes father) took power with his buddies and decided to try and take control of the region including conquering Greece. Well, they beat him at Marathon and he died before getting another crack at them. Xerxes decided he would carry-on his fathers legacy and avenge his loss. Kind of like George W Bush. :-) He lost too.

I know you love quoting this one website in TO verbatim, but I find it's fairly dry, glazing over the passion of how people live regardless of era. I'm sure the only history remaining is what Xerxes had carved in walls, etc, and it's all one sided, just like the Greeks. History's leaders leave their mark and their cynics don't. You can quote me if you like.
  • And I'm sure Darius was a wonderful person. That's why when he came to power there were uprisings everywhere soon afterwards which he had to quash. You know what that means? Fighting and killing people who are against him rather than work together with their differences. Morals, where art thou?
  • The Greeks rebelled against the Persians at Sardis, so that means they faught their rulers doesn't it.
  • Also, sure the Greeks had slaves and participated in buggery, but so did many others. How can we apply todays morals to societies 2500 years ago? Are you feeling so high and mighty that you can pass judgment with todays ethics which we have so much history to make decisions on, where they were blazing trails with new ideas and concepts in civilizations. How can someone consider something wrong when society was okay with it? It takes time for ideas to change. It's called progress. And if you think all societies weren't brutal, including Xerxes's domain, then you're a very closed minded person.
  • Also, I find it interesting that you can say the Greeks attacked first blaming the pirates were Greek. Well, Greece wasn't a unified country then so how can anyone place a blanket statement like that. I have no doubt there were pirates on all sides of the Mediterranean. Pirates are classed as independent adventurers looking out for themselves. They could have policed the sea and spread their values through their actions, but they thought it better to blame a country and attack them. It's just like bringing change through the sword rather than the spoken word – by force. Just like everyone else.
  • I know you think you know everything, but you don't. Keeping an open mind allows for new ideas and possibilities which a narrow vision causes inflexibility. And inflexibility in history speaks for itself.
  • How do you like them apples? :-)
PS: My sister doesn't like 300 either. And that's okay too. Guys like gore, chicks don't.
300's not for everyone. I think it's a mega blockbusting tour due force action movie
which is a fun to watch, just like Aliens, Terminator 2, etc. (I'm sure the Aliens and
Skynet are bent out of shape over the movies, too.) I know 300 feels a
little choppy at times moving through major sections, but it's because the source
material is a comic book.

Guys, less flaming please. You don't have to agree with each other, just respect each other and avoid personal attacks.
