#38 | | Newbie | Oh brother You gotta love South Park - they'll make fun of anything and it's hilarious.
I saw 300 and I saw a few inconsistencies, but I thought it was a good movie. (It's a movie not a documentary.) Butler's acting was pretty cool.
My take on this whole "Iranians are insulted" is Xerxes attached first didn't he? It's historically correct. He had plans to conquer, rape and pillage. Anyone who tries to say he was spreading freedom through war is delusional. There's lots of info in history of how brutal the Persians were - read all about it in your local library. The total size of this army was anywhere from 800,000 to 4 million and he was stopped by 300 Spartans for 3 days.
The Greeks typically argue and war amongst each other. Back stabbing and squabbling in a power struggle just like any other country in history: Italy, France, England, etc. And like other countries, when faced by foreign invasion they put their differences aside to fight for their way of life and to protect their families.
Obviously there are things and events in the movie which were factually innacurate. Like the part when Leonidas visits the oracle and they tell him Sparta will fall and there's nothing he can do about it. Historically, the oracle told him if he doesn't meet the invaders Greece will be enslaved. If he does go and fight, he will die but history will remember his name as a great king and inspire Greece to unite. Personally, I wonder why they didn't use this angle since it's fact and it sounds better to me.
As for the rhino, the giant, the hairless freak Xerxes and the 300 abs? It's a movie. There has to be a good side and bad side in a war movie. When the movie Alexander came out I know for a fact Greeks hated it, but did they get all bent out of shape over it? No. They didn't like it and didn't recommend it. Enough said. None of this boycotting and freaking out like little children. It's movie.
I understand some people don't like the movie for their reasons and I respect that. What I find really annoying is how people think Xerxes was so wonderful spreading love, joy and freedom through war, raping and pillaging. If that's what really happened then I fully understand and there's no problem. But it isn't. He was tryng to conquer Greece and he lost. It's history now. Get over it.
In my opinion, it is a good comic and action movie.

--------------- | Sorry, but I must disagree. Saw it only yesterday, and I'm still regretting the waste of time AND money (price tickets are absurdly high here in Brasil). It's not a movie. It's garbage. Not because of the 'historical inconsistencies', if they exist they aren't the main reason of my sadness. But because THIS IS NOT A MOVIE. I only saw blood all over the screen, bodies been mutilated all the time, a thin line that some naive person could call ' the script', and people making funny faces all the time, trying to convince (?!) us that they're "acting". Sorry, but I can't accept this. If I have time and nothing better to do, I would sue the producers and marketing depts for inducing honest people like me to believe that this crap is ... art.
