Default Networking Question...

Hi guys, sorry to bother you guys again. Currently im using road runners cable, now i have the modem hooked up to a netgear 101g router. I am currently connecting to it using a netgear wireless pci card. Recently me and my friends tried to lan by me him connecting his tower to my tower using direct ethernet cable. This has worked before, however this time when i tried it, it wouldnt let him have access to internet anyone know why? I turned off firewall on windows and pretty sure i turned it off on the router setting on the main computer as well...

That only works if you 'bridge' the two network connections. Problem with that is that feature is only built into WindowsXP, and you lose the ability to access the internet on your computer (it passes through your pc and goes directly to his). I have to setup my system like that as well, when I'm working on computer, because I'm too lasy to buy a router (it does bug me that my wife can't chat while I'm working though ).

What would be better would be to plug your friends computer into one of the ethernet ports on your wireless router (they usually have at least 4 ports). Then both you and him can go through the router to get onto the internet, and if you wanted to LAN you could do that as well !

You can get a Wireless PCI card, or run a really long ethernet cable !

You can also buy ethernet jacks. Run the cable through the walls, install 2 jacks, run the jack upstairs to the router, plug anything you want into the jack downstairs. That idea may end you up ripping apart your walls though, LOL!

Either way, if you wanted to do a PC-to-PC connection without bridging, then there are 2 types of ethernet cable, and you need to have a crossover cable or they will not communicate. A standard straight ethernet is only used going to a router, or cable/dsl modem. WIth a crossover cable (or crossover adapter ~~ about a foot long) you should be able to communicate, share files, share printers, and play games.

Yeah, a crossover cable or crossover adapter would allow you to communicate, directly from your computer to his (no routers involved). You should be able to LAN, share files, share printers, etc. I've played around with the adapters before, and they work well !
