Default Time to change hard disk?

The problem behind the title is that every time I turn on my computer the hard disk starts making a weird sound.. It's like "buzzzzzzzing" about 5 minutes before it's back to normal. Question is: Should I replace my hard disk with a new one? it seems to crash soon.. And the hard disk is about 1-2 years old :P

erm.. that sounds more like a fan,...

or the ball bearings are going in the hdd spindle

so yeah, get a new hdd and copy it all over before your hdd dies,

also, there are some places you can send the hdd which will replace the ball bearings....

yeah, the buzz sounds like fan. Check to make sure the cable are free from the fan. it's also possible that your HD is not secured in the place, chec k to make sure that the screws are not loose.

i constantly get that buzzing sound from an old SCSI drive that i have dated back to 1999. and sometimes it even sounds like the head is actually scratching the disk. but hey it still works fine i use it to store useless data i MIGHT use lol

Oh.. your hard drive is failing for sure!! I have bad experience with maxtors (a couple of them died on friends computer)..

SO first thing you need to do is BACKUP!!
Then download Maxblast v4 for a floppy or cd, which you can get from http://downloads.maxtor.com/download.../maxblast4.exe

And read the diagnostics...
It will surely tell you that your hard drive is failing..

Well, that might be your answer. It sure sounds like its failling!

One thing thats for sure is that Maxtor HDDs are problematic. If you want reliability go with WD or Seagate
