I made sure that it is enabled too. I also opened my computer to check that it is connected I looked under device manager and went to properties and the device status is "Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. (Code 39)" I am using windows vista home premium 64-bit

1. Go to the regedit utility.
2. Proceed in the following order: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE, SYSTEM, CONTROL, CLASS, {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}, and then delete either the "LowerFilters" or "UpperFilters" entry (or both).
Afterwards, reboot your computer. This should fix your problem.

If you delete registry values that are unrelated to this problem, you could cause problems to your computer.

In almost all cases what I've been able to do it go into Device Manager and click on View... Show Hidden Devices. Then I go to the Drives section and remove all but my system drive. From there, I shutdown and reboot and let the system re-detect the devices.
It does appear that you've found a solution. But, I prefer to leave the Registry alone whenever possible.

That is good to know, since a mistake in my regisrty files could mean instant damage to my computer, thank you for the tip. |

This also can be done with other troublesome devices. Make sure to Show Hidden Devices when you do this. In some cases there may be old devices still showing in Device Manager, but are hidden. As long as you don't remove the HDD that your OS is on, this can help clear up some conflicts.
Good luck!
