Choice of RAM depends on the motherboard too. Each has their own likes/dislikes regardless of using the latest bios updates/tweaks.

I would still get the 4850 for numerous reasons such as power consumption, reliable performance, noise/heat output future crossfiring etc. The stock cooler on the 4850 does suck though so factor the cost of an aftermarket cooler/model in.

I heard they changed the design of the reference cooler. Is that true?

As for me, my next upgrades will be an AM3 CPU with new video card, both at the time of release of AM3.

Here got the original stock cooler from AMD|ATI and when the fan is at 50% the temp of the gpu is 45 Celcius(idle) so im not condiderating to buy an after market cooler.Max temp im gettin with the gpu is 78 Celcius after 5 hours of play (Mass Effect).Considerating the CCC 8.10 in the Overdrive you will be able to have the FAN CONTROL.The stock cooler is fair enough.

It can't possibly bear remotely quiet at 50% plus that load temp is not going to help for overclocking and product life. At least replace the stock TIM.
