Default Powering off External Hard Drive

Hey guys,

So i have a question, i just got a external hard drive, the digital research 320gb (it registers as a hitachi in the device manager), anyways for 99$ i really couldnt complain, ive never actually had an extarnal HD before and noticed that it doesnt power down when you power down your system, it does have a I/O switch on the back of it, so should i turn the HD off when i switch my system off? the I/O switch seems like a curde method, feels like im hitting the I/O swtch on my psu while the computer is on which i would never do.

any thoughts?

Turn it off when your system is off.

do you think its healthier to run it standing up in its vertical stand or laying down? i was thinking laying down so there are no forces of gravity acting on the heads or the disk spin
