Default SATA and IDE on same MB

Hi everyone. Great site and great forum. I have an Asus P4C800D and I am running 2 HDs. Primary is IBM Deskstar and slave is cheap Maxtor I use for storage. I would like to install a SATA WD hard drive to replace the IBM. Is it possible to run a SATA and a IDE on the same MB? I called Asus tech support and they say yes but I wasn't comfortable with the answers I got. I would like to know if after installing an SATA, should I keep the second HD as a slave or can I put it to master on the primary IDE MB connector? Asus says to keep the second HD as it is in slave and don't change any cables. If the second HD will be running alone on the primary IDE connection, why couldn't I put it as a master? I know this is an older MB and some are laughing but I am a 1st person shooter gamer and every game that has come out runs fine with no stuttering. Thanks for you concern though.
Thanks for any help or suggestions on this question.

Leave it as slave, it wont make difference if you set it to master, you'll only have problems with it with the auto-detection of grub when installing anykind of linux distro if you set it to master. (your sata will be hd0, but if your ide is set to master it will be hd1 meaning that your sata wont be the master - aka first boot, grub will install in sata mbr hd1 and not hd0 as it should be and you'll have to edit your grub configuration, though you should have no problem with windows).
