Everything is a factor from cooling on your CPU to your chipset. Every Mobo has different options and resolution and detail of settings available. For instance I can't change my multiplier which pushes the rest of my system when I raise the bus speed.

Memory is also an important factor keep an eye on the actual frequency its running at how it is performing as far as read, write and latency ... faster isn't always better. I also found here when raising my bus speed by 15 to 20 percent even with this OCZ performance ram dropping the speed a bit actually improved stability. That can be done with wait states or on your mobo directly with a ratio I think.

Just a few things

thnx for the info, well i have a verified stable 3.1Ghz so I guess i should be happy that i got some free extra performance so far but I feel like an "under-achiever" when also I know other people have got higher speeds.

because of this I don't feel as cool if i were to post my o/clock as " X2 6000+ @ 3.1Ghz" !

Under achieving nah I just really started playing around with overclocking and stuff myself recently its fun to learn and we learn more as we go. You have 2 very good guides here on the forum as you have seen on this thread in Gen and Unix. Gen and a few others on here I have learned from as well. Never to old to teach an old dog new tricks as they say.

My best advise and was advise given to me. Play with things and experiment but be careful in doing so and keep it within reason. Look at it this way someone had to figure this stuff out in the first place who is to say you, I or someone else might find a better way !!

Happy O/Cing and most of all have fun

hehe i can reach those 3,1Ghz on my x2 4800 but anyway i think that your X2 6000+ was good enough just the way it was

It's really pointless to overclock your system. It's killer.

question: will a bios update be likely to make any difference to my ability to o/c my cpu?

It could check your BIOS version and the one currently available. It won't help directly but might offer more options or resolve some already existing in your BIOS
