Default You think your ASrock chipset is running too hot ?

I did so when I tore this computer down last night during the hockey game to make some changes I decided to pop off the passive sink on my chipset. The idea was to see what I had to work with as far as a better cooler for it. I have an older socket CPU with a sink and small fan about the same size as this chip.

What I found was an issue right away look at picture 1 and tell me if you think the thermal paste was applied properly

So cleaned the sink and chip off and applied some good ole Arctic Silver thermal paste (picture 2) and spread it out for a nice smooth film of coverage for the WHOLE chip. Threw it back on and going to see how it works out. For O/Cing my memory is more than fast enough and my CPU and mainboard run quite cool always thought the chipset was the weak link heat wise. We will see (picture 3).

I also noted another VIA chip (picture 4) but I think its the SATA controller not sure if cooling it would be of any advantage or not .... all for now

hehehhehehhe i told you that asrock passive coolers sucks
put a active cooling on that chipset, zalmans or thermaltakes have told you that before
temps with that cooler on via chipset is 45 idle and 50-55 load (with closed case)

and on asrock boards they use cheap aluminum that dont have faster heat flow (it dose not cool the core that fast)

The stock paste looks like squashed chewing gum.

I agree, they dont have the same cautions of the placement of cooling system like a Videocard in a motherboard's chipset.

Well that's sure the stock heatsinks sucks... In my case i putted 2 20mn fans on the heatsink and my heat issue is fixed. But i alredy tryed to put an little circle of thermal paste after an proper layer of thermal paste and after ... too much of thermal paste... the only bad case was the case when i put too much of thermal paste. it did the inverse of what it's supposed to do if you put too much.. but if you dont put enough the thermal energy will be transfered on the little circle.. and thermal paste will be not good more faster.

I have a small fan to add as well but not sure if I need it. The fan for the cpu cooler I changed and also changed the orientation so it flows to the rear of the case. Also this fan is 120 x 120 and is large enough it actually sits just above the mobo in front of my ram and that chipset sink. So far so good

Agreed, Asrock boards are OK but they don't pay enough attention to details such as this. Mind you they are supposed to be budget boards after all.

My dad on his PC has an ASUS motherboard with a VIA K8T890 chipset (socket 939 AMD, PCIexpress) IT has a similar looking heatsink and does maybe 30 at IDLE (at max) and i didn't even chck for thermal paste quality.

They are a cheap board granted but works ok for now. Posted this not so much as a critique but as a reminder to others no matter what board or card you are running never assume everything is as good as it can be. Just because it comes in a box or a package doesn't mean its always as good as it can be

Absolutely right Bro and if it was we would have to rename this section the Overclocking and Cooling section

EDIT: And on your dads chipset cooler can't hurt to take a peek
