From what I've heard the 32-bit version of Vista runs fine on 2GB. But the 64-bit version is more memory intensive and will run better with more. Personally I would really prefer to run the 64-bit version, but the driver support is still not there and may not be till mid-2007 of later. Until then I'll just run XP and let everyone else deal with the bugs. Besides, there may not be that many games immediately available for DX10. I guess we'll see.

I'm pretty much set on waiting out the upgrade to VISTA until things settle down after the official release.

It does look good so far. BUT, as you point out, there are going to be only limited programs/games for the new OS for quite some time.

Another thing to consider: Right after release and for the first few months, tech support is going to be swamped with requests for assistance. So, waiting for a while should give some time for this to settle down as well.

I'm almost positive that you will be able to use DX 10 cards on your XP machine. The drawback will be that the DX 10 features will not be available. Rather, the card will revert to DX9 functions -- which also include the backward compatibility to previous DX functions. DX 7 will be the furthest it will work with.
