Default ATI RC1 Drivers for Vista RC1=Corruption

I've been using the latest Vista downloads. First, I tried the Pre-RC1 release and then installed the latest RC1 release.

I also downloaded the ATi RC1 drivers for Vista.

Well, I can't use these drivers as they cause all kinds of problems when attempting to do very simple things. Among them:

1. Try to view the Device Manager
2. Try to install any program
3. Try to open anything other than the Desktop and/or Browser Window.

Here's what happens:

Once that screen appears, the only remedy is to hit the ESC key...which effectively halts any operation that was started and then returns me to the Desktop.

With this happening constantly, Vista is pretty much useless.

To avoid the problem....or to fix it....I have to boot into Safemode and Uninstall the Video Card and the Drivers for it. Then, I have to make sure to install ONLY the Microsoft drivers (WDDM).

Hopefully, this issue will be resolved soon and I can actualy try Vista with a game or two.

Reminds me of dusty NES game cartages...

And I thought nvidia's Vista drivers were bad... Gives me a little perspective...

Maybe they're using 'fuzzy' logic.

LOL

You know, I've been grumbling about bad Vista drivers all day.

I installed NFS: HP2 (last of the 'classic' NFS games) and my performance was roughly 50-60% less than with 91.xx drivers under XP x64... Using the same settings. Playing with fan made cars for the games with more than 20k polys or so would slow the game to a crawl...

And there is absolutely no excuse for the appalling image quality of the 96.33 drivers. ...Although, it is a little better than ATi's multi-coloured snow. LOL

Oh, and the drivers don't support hardware monitoring. So, I can't check the temperature or overclock the card with software.

Well ATI actually wrote the WDDM drivers that Vista RC1 uses... they're Catalyst 6.7 from what I remember. You're only missing CCC or CP, but the drivers work just fine. The ATI RC1 beta drivers are 6.8, only slightly newer.
