But, since installing and using Vista Home Premium 32-bit since last fall, I've had a very good experience with it. I have my system setup with XP on a totally different HD to which I can boot simply by changing the boot disk in BIOS. I rarely...maybe once per month...boot this system into XP. I do so mainly to keep it updated with Windows Updates and other drivers/software.

I'm not actually encouraging you to make the change, just letting you know it's not the 'Apocalyptic OS' that so many have described it as being. The things that are being said of Vista were also being said of XP for awhile after it was released.

So, just take this as a FWIW comment.

same for me.. i also said i would never use Vista, than i got a trial version from my company and tried the ultimate 64 bit and had absolutely no problems.. well less 3dmarks.. about 100 but well thats not sooo bad. it "feels" a lot faster working with it.

Probably because you are using 64-bit OS now.

That test is the worst way to test the performance of a PC.

well, my only motivation to upgrade would be dx10 and evidently it's not all it's cracked up to be. maybe on the next hardware generation i'll give it a shot or maybe wait and see how this windows 7 thing shakes out.
i also didn't turn on to xp until after sp2.
what can i say, xp does everything i need it to do, for now, i don't feel like i'm missing out on much...

I tend to agree with you on the point that XP does pretty much everything you need it to be doing. Developers haven't dedicated that much effort to the new DX10 and other 'features' of Vista. AND, as long as you don't really need what Vista offers, why put out the money, right?

Also, if I were having the kind of nightmare problems you read so much about with Vista, I'd be back to using XP Pro in a heartbeat. But, I really do like Vista after using it for several months now.

I downloaded a DX10 Demo (PT Boats: Knights of the Sea) some time ago and it literally crawled on my HD2600XT. But, with this HD3870, it performs much, much better. So, as things mature, I'm sure there'll be more to look forward to in the months to come.
