Cool Woohoo! I got a new "toy"!

Just unpacked a new widescreen LCD. It's a Viewsonic VX2025wm. << (It ate my whole tax return.) To my relief there are no bad pixels. I don't notice any "screen-door" effect. But there is some lightness in the corners when the background is black. (It's not like regular backlight bleeding. If you move your head so you look at the side of the display the "lightness" disappears. ??) I watched about 30 mins of Gladiator, looking for the "twinkling" effect that some people mention and could not see it. The extra resolution is great! It will be excellent for spreadsheet work...

Previously I had been using a Samsung 191T+ for my main rig, and the file/print server. I have a third system in the bedroom that uses a Samsung 192MP LCD/TV. Both of these have 25ms response times. This Viewsonic is supposed to have 8ms g-g, and 16ms b-w, response times. Quick tests with an old 3D screensaver showed a huge difference. (The name of the screensaver is "Latice" and it draws an array of interconnecting rings, that you then "travel" through. You can control the number of polygons that you render and the speed at which you "travel" through them.) So while there is some ghosting it's very minimal.

I'll install UT2004 tonight or tomorrow and test that out. I expect to see some ghosting, but I got used to it in WoW I guess. At least I never really noticed it there... I have also verified that AoE3 recognizes and can use the 1680x1050 resolution (this is done without any stretching at all!). I really expect UT2004 to do the same. But the catch is that now I really am going to need to upgrade my system to PCIe. Oh yeah that reminds me...

I had started to overclock my 6800GT a bit. It's a BFG that is factory overclocked to 370MHz core. I seem to be able to run at 400MHz on the core and 1.03GHz on the memory without issue. But what I really want to know is: What are people's opinion of the "Auto Overclocking" feature? Does it work ok? Better yet; does anyone know how it's "supposed" to work? Thanks in advance for the info.

So no comments about the "Auto Overclocking" feature....?

I've been trying it, not sure how much good it does, but it didn't make my system completely unstable.

No familiar with that one Cannyone if your system remains stable play around with it and run some benchmarks can't hurt

I dont suggest you use the auto-overclocking feature in coolbits, it can be very very leniant with your clock speeds, its better for you to just bump up bump up test, bump up bump up test.

I let mine autooverclock and realized i could increase the speeds 15% more then what coolbits autoclocked it to.

Just do the dirty work yourself haha

Well after this last week ... (of being completely sucked into Oblivion) I've discovered that I don't really want to overclock my video cards while playing this game. At first I was so disappointed because the game kept crashing repeatedly. But now I've determined that part of the instability had to be overclocking the video card. Naturally some of it was game settings. The first thing I found was that my system can't handle the "Large" texture maps. That cured the majority of the crashes. Then dropping the video card clocks back to stock fixed the rest. (Even so there are still times when the games starts to pause for a second. I've begun to suspect it's related to AGP transfers, but it's hard to tell till I get PCIe.

Today I discovered that I had been given the honor of being selected as the new owner of Regen's old X800GTO. So I ordered that PCIe motherboard I had been wanting. It's a TUL AX480A7, which is basically a Radeon Express 200P northbridge with a ULi 1573 southbridge. It will be fun to see what it can do, I'll have to overclock the video card some.
