Default ATI's R580 chips in production

LAST SUMMER we wrote about ATI's next high end chip. It's codenamed R580 and it was taped out when Nvidia released its GTX 256 MB part. The first tape out was successful and the chip has looked good ever since.

I'm looking forward to seeing how ATI can design a 16-pipe card which is comparable to an Nvidia 32-pipe card.

I'm also assuming that ATI will have plenty of stock available at launch to hopefully make up for the tardiness of R520. If this happens this will put some pressure back on Nvidia, which is good for us consumers.

And lastly I'm looking forward to hearing all the bleeding-edge enthusiasts complain that "Hey, I've only had my X1800XT for a few months, and now I have to upgrade already???"
