Default building new pc any thoughts welcome

hi all ,

im about to start buying parts to build a new pc and would like some one to cast an eye over it and tell me how long its likly to last b4 i have to upgrade again and any other thoughts they have bout what im doing

AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core 6400+ 3.20GHz (Socket AM2)
Asus CROSSHAIR nForce 590 SLi (Socket AM2) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard
GeIL 2GB (2x1GB) PC2-6400C4 800MHz Ultra Low Latency DDR2 Dual Channel Kit ,times 2
Western Digital Raptor 150GB 10000RPM SATA 16MB Cache - OEM

i have a pair of 7950gt oc cards atm but will upgrade to 8 series some short time after building and getting the main bundle running, il probly use my enermax 535w psu and an old creative audigy soundcard .
il upgrade psu at the same time as i get new graphic cards

the reason why im asking this is because the last system i brought was 939 and i got it right at the end of 939 socket so it went out of date within 6 months (probly less but didnt need to look for 6months)

im want this system to be upgrade able for a while atleast
im going amd, nvidia, sli as im not a pc god and i just about understand and know where i am with it as opposed to intel and ati witch i know nothing about.

i have £160 to spend on each component each week

any thoughts greatly welcome RV

my old pc a8nsli se mobo, 3700 san deago chip, 1gig geil ram,535w psu and 2 7950 gt oc cards this system runs nice but its struggleing with crysis and i cant really upgrade it as im finding atm

why not go AM2+ Phenom system for more future proofing

All fine but I'd change the motherboard. The crosshair is a truely excellent motherboard, however I agree with chaos on future proofing. Go AM2+ even if you don't intend on getting a phenom right now (which would be my advice too). By going AM2+ you'll have access to faster memory, faster hypertransport, pci express 2, more overclocking features and you won't have to go through hell to get support for future processors.
See if you can wait for one with the next generation AMD southbridge SB700 if sata and usb performance matters for you. Don't worry AM2+ will not be at the end of it's road any time soon. Even future cpus with DDR3 memory controllers will be able to switch to DDR2 for AM2+ motherboards.

For graphics go for either the 8800GT () or 8800GTS (G92 of course).

thanks 1 question tho

is a 2.2 quad core better than a 3.2 duel core ??

i know the quad core can do more but im makeing a game machine and my aim is to make a pc that will crysis on atleast high settings once i get my 8800 cards

also i just been looking round and theres no am2+ sli boards atm
tho the next part im getting is the raptor witch means i wont be ordering a board till march 1st time even then i could buy a chip instead and just give that extra time for te new mobos to hit us

i think im building at a bad time as my 2 shops i like to use seem to be clearing out pre xmas stock b4 the new lines come in tho this does mean i can get stuff cheep

i really dont know what to do really stumpd

thanks for ur advice and info

I have a dual core and I play crysis. The gpu makes all the difference. Eventually you'll reach a part of the game where even a 3Ghz quad core wouldn't save you. I also recommend against buying a phenom until the process is matured and the issues ironed out.

CPU: Q6600 @ 3.4 Ghz
GPU: 2 x 9800GX2
M/B: XFX 780i
RAM: 4096 Corsair 800 XMS2
PSU: Galaxy 850W
Default

Save up a bit more money and buy:

Intel Q6600 CPU + decent Sli mobo (and check it has good overclocking potential) + min 250GB sata HDD 7200 rpm (you dont really need faster HDD) + 20x DVD RW w/lightscribe + 750-850W PSU + 4 GB 600mhz min RAM + 64 bit Vista home premium + 19" wide monitor + X-fi extreme gamer + decent set of 2.2 speakers + (then if you can afford it) 2 x 8800 ULTRA GPU ----> if you're really on a budget get 2 x 8800 GTS instead

Stick it all together and you really will have one of the best gaming PC's around for about £1600 - happy, happy days !!

Avaunt foul thread necromancer! This thread is dead. Allow the dead their peace. For 1600quid I can build a rig that plays basketball with you and your suggested rig and your current rig combined!

sigh, oh look, well if it isn't the "constant thorn in my side" !! i was just trying to contribute ok!! jeeez and I gave him quite a high "realistic cost" of the kind of amount he would need to be playing with if he really wants to have a top spec gaming rig... any more objections??? huh?

(the truth is, i am just bored and i didn't look at the date of the last post - silly me!)

HA - I just checked, and if you were to buy all the components I listed below from Amazon today (the 8800 Ultra setup plus a decent keyboard and mouse) it would cost you almost £1600. So there UNix !!! ahahaha I was right!

No offense but you're an idiot. I didn't say the cost was wrong. I said I can build a better rig with the same price. Spell this please: D U H
