#1 | | Newbie | | GPU: XFX 7800GS 256mb AGP | | | RAM: 1gb pc3200 DDR (2x512) | | Best NGO for XFX 7800GS 256mb AGP? Hi, i'm fairly new here, but...a game recently game out called the dark messiah of might and magic..hopefully you've heard of it...you should if your a gamer anyway..
Well..I reformatted about 2 weeks ago, and...basically, I've never been able to get this goddamn video card to perform the way it should...it just doesnt run well, and it's annoying.
I did however have TESIV: oblivion running full settings with tweaked graphics settings for better visuals, and natural environments mod and it was running silky smooth.
I forget how I got the game like that, because now...after reformatting, the game stutters an awful lot, and it's rather annoying, and it also runs pretty badly even in, indoor areas, which it NEVER did before, it was always super smooth before.
Anyway...other games run fairly badly...games based on the source engine especially.
I used to be able to play source games on full graphics with a nvidia 6600GT 128mb AGP graphics card..except for AF was at 8x not 16x....but something happened along the way and then I could never play a source game at higher settings again...it annoyed me greatly.
What annoyed me even more was when I got the Nvidia 7800GS and it ran just the same...I couldnt play games on max..
I went to a LAN party just before reformatting and there were people with crappier computers than mine, and they ran counter strike source nice and silky smooth on highest settings...but no...not I....
Oh..and the person next to me, he had the same graphics card...only he had an extreme edition or something...and he was running all the games fine...where as I even had troubles with trackmania sunrise...out of all the games..that one ran like shite! It got to the point where it was unplayable on my system, and I couldnt compete at the LAN...I also couldnt compete in CSS or company of heroes which is also a game that runs like crap....I can't get this card working to it's full potential, I don't know why, it's frustrating considering the amount of money I paid for it, and the amount of time I spent saving up that money.
Recently...as of 4 days ago, I got the Dark Messiah of might and magic.
As some may know...the game is naturally buggy at this stage..because the game just wasnt complete when it was released obviously.
Anyway...I have to say that i've been working on making this game run properly for these past 4 days, and I've run into nearly just about every error that other people have reported on the forums.
The main problem I have is just the performance..I am not concerned about crashes and the rest...I just want smooth fps, and I've tried out all of the NGO drivers from 84.56 and...none run the game any better than the last.
Anyway....the game is buggy, it's not your drivers.
I would like to know from anyone else who has this card, what driver you are using, and are your games running good with the driver.
Right now i'm using the 84.56NGO driver...I'm just too tired to uninstall the drivers from my graphics card in device manager, then reinstall, do a driver clean, using driver cleaner, and then doing a registry clean to clean out the registry left over from the drivers, then install the next driver and find that it also doesnt run very well.
So..yeah..what driver are y'all using...I tried the latest 92...whatever it is..and it isn't very good when I try running oblivion, the game still stutters...I'm thinking I should install some more games, like cod2, bf2 and whatever else, just to test the games on.
Anyway...I'm looking forward to a response. Thanks in advance. |

Let me tell you some things:
i have exactly the same card and with this card many problems are a fact and xfx admits this.. but they are almost all solveable.
first look (if you bought the card recently) if you dont have a plastic under the plate of the fan.
for more info search google on: xfx 7800gs extreme plastic issue.
second. many of the problems that accur with performance decrease and stuff like that is not the card but your mobo/power sup/proccesor and stuff like that.
You need a good mobo to run this card properly.
if you dont wanna exchange your mobo or you have a good one try updating the chipset drivers.
make sure you have atleast a 400w power supply with 12v and 20A on the 12v rail.
if you have a very slow proccesor then you PC is a bottleneck for this card.
and make sure that in the bios the agp settings are on 256 or even higher if possible.

I am about to purchase either this 600W PSU: http://www.megapc.com.au/product_det...part_indx=5854
OR
A 500W PSU for cheaper of course: http://www.megapc.com.au/product_det...part_indx=5942
I think 500W is ideal, but maybe 600W will be good aswell..I think I might go for the 500W depending on the postage costs and stuff.
NOTE: those prices are australia, I am australian..the prices are not of any other currency.
I have contacted the website, but I still havent recieved a response back after several days...so i'm a little concerned as to whether this is a good site or not...I use www.staticice.com to find the cheapest prices on computer bits...even though there may be cheaper out there...so..yeah, this is the cheapest I found on the list.
The Nvidia forums suggested getting a psu with a 12v rail on it...these ones have dual 12v rails..so hopefully that will fix up my issues.
I think it will..as right now I only have a 430W psu, which runs my graphics card, mobo, hard drive, sound card, cpu, fans, etc...and I think it is not enough so the power to the graphics card has been reduced, and therefore reducing my performance that I am getting...which i've had before a while ago with a 6600GT and a 240W psu :P
Thanks again for your help, I'll be getting a PSU soon, I'll let you know if it helps. |

#5 | | Advanced Newbie | | CPU: Intel Core2Quad Q9550 | | Hello,
I would say...hmm...there is no "best" Driver for a Graphicboard. It also depends on your CPU, Ram, etc.
And, remember...each Driver runs different on each System. For myself, I test a new Driver with Games and Benchmarks. I like better Imagequality...so for me it's not nessesary to get 2 or 3 FPS more...in cost of Quality.
Just test a few Versions, and then take the best running one.
Greetings

The game ran silky smooth on top graphics with the natural environments mod on before I reformatted, but now it's crappy performance, I keep getting constant stuttering, the game has low fps even indoors...I dunno what happened after I reformatted. |
