#1 | | Newbie | | CPU: Core2 Duo 6320 1.86GHz | | | GPU: nVIDIA Gefore3 Ti 200 | | Unable to install nVIDIA Optimized - normal or Safe I tried installing the nVIDIA Optimized normally and rebooted - unable to start XP and it automatically reboots (no blue screen though).
So I reboot into Safe mode and uninstall so I can reinstall selecting I have Compatability issues. I reinstall normally selecting I have Compatability issues and reboot - again unable to start XP and it automatically reboots (no blue screen though).
So I reboot into Safe mode and uninstall again and decide to install in Safe mode selecting I have Compatability issues. I reinstall normally selecting I have Compatability issues and reboot - again unable to start XP and it automatically reboots (no blue screen though).
(With me so far?).
So I reboot into Safe mode to uninstall and there is no uninstaller there to uninstall. I install an old copy of Nasty File Remover thinking I can use that to remove all nVIDIA files. However when I try to run it I get the message that mscomctl.ocx is missing. I figure this has something to do with trying to run it in Safe mode.
So now I can't uninstall nVIDIA Optimized in Safe mode and I can't boot normally to run Nasty File Remover. All the time I've noticed that when I boot into Safe mode I hang on agp440.sys - what is this and what is my problem? (because I don't want to get a sledgehammer to crack a nut).
Cheers in advance. |

Cheers in advance. | CAN YOU BOOT at all ???? cos from what you write ether you write from other PC or i dont get it. IF you cant boot in SF or normal , then you can forget about fixing it .
Just go in to safe mode , CP/add or remove programs / find NVIDIA drivers and uninstall .
Update : i dont know if you realize but when you install NGO driver , you first install the files on you hd , add start/programs ngo tab , and then from this files it install the driver it self , so from what you write , you are missing that tab at start/programs , you can still remove it at CP , as the drivers it self .
PS. when you uninstall the NGO files from you pc , the DRIVER IT SELF remains .
PS2. You can run safe mode with network support , and download Drivercleaner , and use this to complet clean after uninstalling drivers.

#7 | | Edelweiss Corporal | OK i found this mate :
RESOLUTION
To resolve this issue, follow these steps to disable the Agp440.sys service.
Important You must know the administrator password to complete the following procedure. If you do not know the administrator password, contact your system administrator. After you complete this procedure, any video adapter driver you have installed will be disabled, and Windows XP will use default VGA drivers.
1. Insert your Windows XP CD-ROM into the computer CD-ROM drive or DVD-ROM drive, and then restart your computer from the CD-ROM.
Note Some computers may require that you modify the basic input/output system (BIOS) settings before you can start the computer from a CD-ROM. For information about how to modify the BIOS, see your computer documentation.
2. At the Welcome to Setup screen, press R to start the Recovery Console.
3. Press the number key that corresponds to the installation that you want to repair, and then press ENTER.
4. Type the password for the administrator account of that installation, and then press ENTER. You receive a drive:WINDOWS> prompt, where drive is the drive on which Windows XP is installed.
5. Type listsvc, and then press ENTER.
6. Make sure that the Agp440 service is listed, and that the startup type is set to "Boot".
7. Press ESC.
8. Type disable agp440, and then press ENTER.
9. You receive a message that the registry setting for this service was found, and that its current startup state is "service_disabled".
10. Type exit, and then press ENTER.
11. If you are prompted to start in Safe mode or Normal mode, start in Normal mode.
12. Log on to your computer.
Windows XP includes default video drivers that make it possible for your monitor to work. However, some features may not work as you expect with these default drivers. Update your motherboard chipset video drivers periodically. To do so, visit your computer manufacturer's Web site, and download the most recent drivers for your video adapter.

#8 | | Newbie | | CPU: Core2 Duo 6320 1.86GHz | | | GPU: nVIDIA Gefore3 Ti 200 | | Well obviously I'm writing from another computer. To all those people who said boot into Safe mode or uninstall normally - PLEASE reread what I wrote!
Yes I did a Google search earlier and did turn up the agp440.sys problem on the Microsoft website. I think I'm going to give that a go tonight when I get home (sounds like it's a pre-existing problem then by all acounts). Many thanks for your help though.

#10 | | Newbie | | CPU: Core2 Duo 6320 1.86GHz | | | GPU: nVIDIA Gefore3 Ti 200 | | Actually what I did was reboot selecting Last known Good Configuration That Worked - and that allowed me to boot up.
Uninstalled the nVIDIA driver and installed the lastest & greatest chipset drivers for my motherboard.
Installed the nVIDIA driver and same problem as before - so I'm afraid I've given up on the driver. I'm guessing it doesn't support my chipset drivers or my graphics card is to old for the latest drivers. I've gone back to some old Starstorm drivers I had and they work fine. Maybe if & when I upgrade my graphics card I'll give this nVIDIA driver another go. [shrugs] |
