Default TV aspect ratio bug

Hi there,

I'm proud owner of a 7600GT AGP made by XpertVision/Palit. Unfortunately, I'm experiencing issues concerning the aspect ratio of the tv output as well. Everything ele works well, though!

This seems to be a major issue with the 9x series of Forceware drivers, although ngohq is the only drivers resource actually admitting that such a bug realy does exist. As mentioned in "Open Bugs in v2.9792", tv out aspect ratio is not correct. There is no fix yet! Some workarounds exist, though.

Older drivers, such as 84.21, do not have this bug. Unfortunately these drivers won't install on my machine, no suitable graphics device can be found an setup quits. I then tried to modify the inf file by myself, the result was that the setup went on past the hardware detection but then crashed the whole system. In fact, I couldn't even get into Windows after that, had to uninstall the drivers in safe mode.

Now my question is: Which NGOHQ driver is based on 84.21 and does it support AGP version of nVidias 7600GT GPU? Are there other 8x Forceware or NGOHQ drivers that do support my card? Did anyone experience problems installing these drivers?

Any help appreciated, thanks for reading anyway!

Edit: Yeeks, found out how NGOHQ enumerats the drivers ;-) Dammit, sorry, I was kinda blinbd I guess. by now I tried 19381, which actually is the same driver I had installed before. The problem isn't fixed yet, but AquaMark gives me about 600points less than before. Well, I could have lived with that...

18466 refuses to start installation, no suitable hardware detected. Just the same as those original Forceware 8x drivers...

Ok, I somewhat got it sorted out now!

This solution is somewhat specific to my graphics card (7600 AGP), but the procedure should be similar for other cards. Here's what I did:

I downloaded both v18466 and v19381. Then I had a look into the nv4_disp.inf files. The device ID I was looking for was something like "7600GT AGP" or at least "7600GT". In v19381 I found two of these. One must have been for PCI-E, one for AGP. Since 84.xx was supposed to already support PCI-E cards, I compared the DeviceIDs and found that 0391 already was included in v18466. So DeviceID 0391 was the ID for PCI-E and the second DeviceID I found in v19381 was the ID for AGP cards (02E0).

The string 02E0 may be found twice in nv4_disp.inf (v19381). Be sure to copy and paste both lines. In my specific case I copied

%NVIDIA_BR02.DEV_02E0.1% = nv4_NV3x, PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_02E0

and

NVIDIA_BR02.DEV_02E0.1 = "NVIDIA GeForce 7600 GT "

from v19381 to v18466. I then modified the line

NVIDIA_BR02.DEV_02E0.1 = "NVIDIA GeForce 7600 GT "

into

NVIDIA_BR02.DEV_02E0.1 = "NVIDIA GeForce 7600 GT Palit AGP "

This was meant for me to have some kind of clue whether this really was the line I needed to add.

Guess what! After saving this modified .inf file v18466 really did install without any major glitches on my system! What I got was this:

In Device Manager the card now shows up as NVIDIA GeForce 7600 GT Palit AGP. So I obiously got the modding right ;-)

TV out aspect ratio is correct.

AquaMark3 gives about the same results as before (Forceware 93.81). All games I tried as of yet did work the way thwy did before (Quake4, Doom3, FEAR, FarCry)

When opening the nVidia Control Panel the card doesn't have a "name", it's called "unknown" and GPU ist "unknown" as well.
It's working great though.

This is working for me, it may not work for YOU. You should be aware of what you are doing and I may not be held responsible for any damage you deal to your hardware by trying this!
