Default Disappointing performance of my Radeon X1600 Mobility ... what's wrong?

Hi!

I bought a laptop a few months ago, an Acer Aspire 5672WLMi with the following system (there are different versions on the market):

Intel Core DUO 1,66

ATI Mobility Radeon X1600 with 128 MB RAM, up to 512 with Hyper Threading

1 GB RAM (just bought two 1 GB bars of the manufactor infinity, so now I have 2 GB!)

I guess for gaming, these are the key features of the Laptop.

Before I bought the laptop, I saw that some internet sites tested this laptop and others with about the same features (I think one had a little faster CPU, a 173 GHz one). All of them ran Quake 4 and Doom 3 without any problems. No stuttering, etc. at all.

Now I thought let's try those games and unfortunately, I can do whatever I want, the game stutters. I even lowered the graphics quality to medium, I even tried ultra. Suprisingly, the results were almost the same. The very first level, when u enter this base, the fps drop to 10 (high quality), 12 (medium) or 9 (ultra).

WTF?!

I use the 7.3 NGO drivers. I admit, I haven'T tried the new 7.4 ones, but I somehow doubt (from what I have experienced during my 15 years of dealing with computers ...) that this driver will make a game run without any stuttering while the previous version doesn't ...

But is it possible that I have overlooked something? Is the game not opimized for the x1600?! is there anything I can do, maybe in the famous config files of these two games to make those games run better?

Thx in advance.

hmm, no1 here whp could help me?

Another thing I was wondering about is that with the original driver from ATI, games always fit the whole screen. But if I have the NGO ones installed and I choose a resolution of e.g. 1024x768 (which is 4:3, right?) there are black bars at the sides. With the original drivers, the screen gets strechted somehow so it even the entire screen is filled if I choose a 4:3 resolution. Can I activate this somehow in the NGO drivers, too?

thx

This would be more of a question to ask Regeneration, since he is the one who designed the drivers.

X1600 mobile graphics are not to be considered as integrated because they are installed or soldered on a socket.

You are generalizing too much. Get a laptop with two Nvidia 7950 Go`s in SLi-on-chip, and even if its a laptop you`ll get some killer results, better than any X1900GT`s or x1950pro`s.

sorry, don't wanna get on ur nerves, but can u fuys discuss stuff liek that somewhere else?

I mean I seek for a solution to my problem, and this chit.chat about x1950 GT, GTS, XLPSTUGFH, GTIDONTCARE chips is not much of a contribution to my problem.

Sorry, but I don't care much about how fast a graphics chip can be that I just can't affort ... ... I can't buy a laptop for 2500 EUR or more. So ...

... ANY SOLUTIONS?

... since I get this problem of the scaling of the picture in many games (which do not support 16:9 / 16:10 resolutions, but only 4:3) I am pretty eager to find anything that might help to fit the screen with the whole picture.

Thx for any real help in advance.
