DOSBox 0.70
Posted by Regeneration on March 11th, 2007, 04:05 AM

DOSBox emulates an Intel x86 PC, complete with sound, graphics, mouse, modem, etc., necessary for running many old DOS games that simply cannot be run on modern PCs and operating systems, such as Microsoft Windows 2000, Windows XP, Linux and FreeBSD. However, it is not restricted to running only games.

i dislike the fact it emulates a cpu... i would much prefer it to use the physical cpu and implment timing controls

it works to a point... its only the equivalent of a 486..

Tyrian runs like ass on it... but runs fine on my 9x based Duron system in my room

Get D-Fend the graphical frontend (though you wouldn't need it if you knew all the configs). There are loads of emulation/cpu settings you can change including the ability to speed up a game if it's too slow or slow it down if it's too fast. Really brilliant software. Works on Linux too...

Virtual PC/VMware + Real MS-DOS = Perfection.

I use the Taewoong Yoo CVS Dosbox release, much better functionality, frequent updates and MT32 Emulation

Well in the 90's when this was first introduced 486 era games were the target

Tyrian Rulez

on other notes nothing beats REAL dos for those games (actually nothing beats a 486 or a P133) but dosbox is a good tool overall sure its not nearlly perfect (in some cases and CPU'S it takes 100%) but games work fine on it tried DUNE 2 , Vrally and couple of king/space Quests although best tool for running LUCAS ARTS quests is ScummVM or any game that it would detect very easy to use and has some cool effects..

never tried D-Fend sounds damn usefull will have to check it out.

i use Dfend

1. i can't get Blood to work
2. i can't get Theme Hospital to work

3. Tyrian either runs jumpy, or like its in turbo mode. (Tyrian requires 70,000-80,000 cycles for the jukebox in the setupapp to work at full speed, and requires 125,000 - 150,000 cycles for the actual game to run fast enough to play)

also

i prefer to play my dos games on atleast 1ghz, because i can then use the Higher Quality General midi without slowdowns:P
