How to Enable Processor-Based Security @ Hardware Secrets
Posted by Regeneration on February 27th, 2007, 09:43 PM

At last PCs operating under Windows have a security level similar to that used by high performance servers. This technology – known under names that vary from manufacturer to manufacturer, such as NX (No eXecute), EVP (Enhanced Virus Protection), XD (eXecute Disable), or DEP (Data Execution Protection) – allows the processor itself to detect when a malicious code (such as a virus or a Trojan horse) is attempting to run and automatically disables such code, "drowning" the virus. i recommend disabling DEP in XP SP2, as it causes more problems then its worth

it was basically tacked on in XP SP2

vista has just as many issues with it.

in other words

DEP will cause issues for end users, who just want to use thier computer.

if your computer is a server then all's dandy

to disable DEP

start > run> type 'notepad c:\boot.ini'

change /noexecute=optin to /execute=optin

reboot.

Useless DEP is now disabled.
