Vista upgrade invalidates your XP key @ Tomcoyote.org

If you choose to purchase an upgrade version of Windows Vista to upgrade XP, you will no longer be able to use that version of XP. Either on another system, or as a dual-boot option. The key will be invalidated, preventing activation.

I think M$ is gonna cut their own throats the way they are rolling Vista out, all the negative press has to scare buyers away

It's going from ridiculous to hilarious to see how many times MS has to backtrack on all this.

Anyway, there's a workaround that actually allows one to do a 'clean install' of Vista using an Upgrade DVD of Vista:

Workaround for Clean Install of Vista

This method elminates even having to insert a previous version of Windows. BUT, it does require installing Vista TWICE.

Yes and I found that latter part odd when you mentioned it to me Dyre ....

I guess this is another reason why I'm glad I upgraded when I did. See I was too early to get copies of MCE that offered the "free upgrade". And, after trying the beta, I really didn't want to install Vista till the later half of this year anyway. (I just hope I can get a good contract like last year, so I can afford to build a new Quad Core system...)

As for what I think about MS for doing this? Well in one respect it makes sense, if you bought a copy that featured a "free upgrade" it stands to reason that MS would want to transfer the software's license. And I think it's also been their (MS) longstanding policy not to approve of any dual booting setups. So they are most likely well within their rights.

Well lets see, no drivers for half of my hardware, some of my games won't work with Vista at this time, now I can't use my XP anymore, one more reason to not upgrade to Vista. I'm sticking to XP. I get all the eye candy I need with Vista Transformation Pack 6.0. Maybe in a couple of years when all the bugs have been fixed in Vista maybe then I'll upgrade.
