[CES 2007] AMD Promises 16-core Threading by 2012 @ The Inquirer
Posted by Regeneration on January 9th, 2007, 12:15 AM

An AMD panellist here in Vegas thinks that it will reach sixteen cores software programming within five years. This will be in time for the Playstation 4, the new Xbox and Geforce G2012 or Radeon whaetever they will want to call it. The next move for 2007 is to get to software quad core optimised. After that, it will go exponential and move to sixteen cores. Software should be threaded to exploit sixteen cores in the next five years, the AMD spinner spun.

If AMD & Intel want to sell 4 core 8 core or even 16 core CPU´s, the software companies really need to start to make their software multithreaded. Most software today doesnt even use 2 cores yet. And i havent seen any improvement the last year even. Dual core cpu´s have been here for a while here already, yet no decent software use it. No games either. Good luck on getting any quadcore sold for mainstream non gamer users, if you cant sell any other benefits with them.

vista has been built around threading

the more cores you have, the better

I know of about 2 or 3 games that use multiple threads just off the top of my head.
X3 Reunion is multi thread the economy/trading database is on one thread and the game graphics ect ect on other threads.

Also anything that uses the "Havok system" detects if the platform is capable of multiple threads HT or real multi core. Thats Oblivion & CoH for a start off.

HydraCore™ is Havok's latest innovation in middleware for games. It is a software technology that accelerates Havok-powered games by leveraging multi-core and multi-threaded PC and video game hardware to deliver unparalleled physical game-play experiences and dynamically responsive character animation that truly scales with the native power of next-generation game platforms.

sure there is software that use it, but not many, and not very well done if used. But when vista comes and dx10 hopefully more and more developers will start to optimize for multi core´s.
