| | | Grisoft AVG Free Edition AntiVirus Review @ TweakNews | What if I told you that there was a free option on the internet that has all the benefits of a good antivirus without the performance decrease, and unlimited updates for one small price. How affordable is this small price? Well, think as affordable as you can possibly get. That's right, it is free.
[NLN=Grisoft AVG Free Edition AntiVirus Review]http://www.tweaknews.net/reviews/avg/[/NLN] | | 13 Comments | | | I've been using it for around 4 years now, and have always had great luck with it. Matched with Firefox (script-blocker and Adblock), it makes a very secure system. Almost as if they designed it for performance-hungry gamers, it uses almost no resources and is very easy to use. A must-have for gamers... | | | | I highly recommend this to anyone needing a free antivirus. I've even used it off an on myself. However, Comcast provides both firewall and antivirus free for subscribers, so, I use that.
Grisoft has a good reputation and it's very commendable that they are providing a free service like this with free and frequent updates as well. | | | | I'm sorry to say this but ... AVG AV is total crap
it's the worst ever av
I'm using Av Personal Personal Premium - about 19Eu/year
and there is a free version por personal use | | | | Quote: |

One of the most popular columnists in printed newspapers in the U.S. has recommended this AV for years now. Literally thousands of people are using it and attest to its superb performance as protection against infection.
Here's just one other reviewer's opinion: http://www.newsfactor.com/news/Revie...d=032003MQMNPC
And, a snippet:
"Going up against the likes of McAfee and Symantec is no easy task. However, Grisoft's AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition, available as a free download from the company's Web site, is a viable alternative to what the established antivirus market leaders now offer.
At the heart of the software, now in version 7.1, is the AVG Control Center, which presents a graphical interface that contains the software's main antivirus-protection functions. The interface shows you, at a glance, the main protection features, the calendar dates on which the next tests and program updates are scheduled to run, and the current status of the program's Virus Vault, which is where infected files are first quarantined and then subjected to further treatment." |

I can show you more reviews that point to AVG's poor detection and removal of infected files
want an example? here: http://translate.google.com/translat...%2D2006%2Ehtml
translated from french with google
antivirus companies pay for favorable reviews; an example SoftWin's Bitdefender
it's made in my country and tested it from it's first release; lots of people say this is a good AV ... It's a lie
to say an av is good, it must be tested individualy for monts not in 1 or 2 hours ... like it the mentioned review
personaly I tested some of them: Avast! (goood, but slow); AVG (does not worth mention); BitDefender (lot of noise ... it kills your system, cannot scan from safe-mode); Norton (excelent, in the latest version does not "eat" as mutch of ram as earlyer versions) and so on ... | | | | Norton.... I tested it, still uses too much of your system's resources. Let's face it, if your getting tons of viruses, stop hitting "free porn" in google. No, avg isn't the best out there, but it is the best free one out there, is comparable to paid ones, and doesn't eat your system up running in the task bar. I ran norton's for 6 months after I picked up a virus using avg. I reformatted my puter, ran nortons, and got a virus there. The point is: No anti-virus solution is bullet-proof, it all depends on your surfing habits, but avg is good for those gamers out there that are safe surfers.... | | | | I've used AVG for about a year now. I'm a pretty safe surfer so I've only ever had one virus and AVG yanked it for me. Mostly I just use SpyBot and AdAware to snag the cookies that are dropped on my system. If you're smart and experienced it's actually more difficult to get a virus than to not get one. Keep your Windows updated, don't surf for cracks/porn and don't open stupid e-mails. Problem solved. | | | | | | sometimes i even forget i dont have an antivirus installed, but yeah AVG is the best there is at what it does, however there is no better protection than to be careful on what u do in the net, i get people all the time complaining on how their so wonderful antivirus (mostly norton) didnt protect them from an unknown virus, then i find out they were trying to open a video file that was installing ¬¬
seriously, many people, too many if may i say -_- | | | | Quote: |

According to INDEPENDENT CONSUMER RESEARCH comparing ALL AV programs, both paid and free ones, AVG rates very good for a free program.
Check out this entire report comparing both purchased and free AV programs recently published: http://www.consumersearch.com/www/so...ory.html#intro
And this particularly:
" Free antivirus software
Reviews say that free antivirus software can be just as effective as paid programs for capturing viruses. The main differences are that free software isn't as full-featured and user friendly as paid software, and ISCA Labs or Virus Bulletin does not currently certify free software. Even so, reviews say free antivirus software has become very good.
Free programs such as Grisoft's AVG Free Edition and avast! 4 Home Edition are said to be excellent alternatives if you are looking for basic protection from e-mail viruses and worms and don't want to pay upwards of $40 for full-featured antivirus software. These free downloadable antivirus programs both offer e-mail scans and automatic updates to protect against the latest threats. PC Magazine gives three titles an equal rating: AVG Free Edition, avast! 4 and AntiVir Personal Edition. [Emphasis mine] Experts say with such strong free products available, there’s truly no reason to go without antivirus software."
BTW, for purchased programs, McAfee gets the nod for being the best. |

| Quote | | | | | whatever you want ...I know different | | | | I’m not using any Anti-Virus or Firewall since 2002. It takes too much RAM and Virus developers are always changing their PE encrypters. There are much false detection and some more annoying things. The best AV is a mix up between your brain and “msconfig”. It’s working on my side, the last time I had virus issues - were at 2000. | | |
