downloaded and installed 6.8 with CP but, the option page in CP shows CATALYST version as 6.7, details show display driver version 8.282-060802a-035179C, seems to be the correct driver version for catalyst 6.8, so why CATALYST version display as 6.7?

The 6.8 drivers (both the CCC version and this one) indentify as the 6.7 drivers.
ATI have acknowleged this , and knew about this when they released them.
They choose to release anyway because even the smallest change would require the drivers to be resubmitted for WHQL testing which would delay the drivers for a week and it makes no difference other than the name.
