Mainman I have been trying to remain as neutral on this merger as I can. Yes I am Canadian and yes I have met some people that have made ATI what is is today. I have always supported AMD in most ways yet after reading this question/ response on the Driverheaven interview I am skeptical
Driver Heaven: Is the long term strategy to operate as one company or two? For example, will gfx still continue to be designed in ATI's existing facilities and CPU's on AMD's or should we expect to see a merging of engineers/designers where everyone provides expertise on forthcoming products?
Jon Carvill: The merged company will operate as AMD once the transaction close. ATI will continue to manufacture its graphics processors with TSMC and UMC. AMD is very comfortable with a hybrid approach to manufacturing as evidenced by our recent success in ramping microprocessor production at Chartered Semiconductor. Certainly, we anticipate that this merger will present new and exciting ways for our engineers to collaborate in areas like mobile, commercial, digital media and emerging markets.
Mr. Carvill no disrespect but I have a further question to ask if you do happen to see it here on NGOHQ ....
Question:
So from your comment "The merged company will operate as AMD once the transaction close". Does this mean ?
(I would have said, "The merged company will operate as AMD once the transition is complete". Don't mind me just a simple editor here)
1) You will "obtain" ATI after this "transaction" closes? Will you take that company name and identity and bury under your own name "AMD" as Microsoft recently did with "Longhorn Linux" ? (Windows Vista)
2) Or will you create a similar scenario involving MS and Intel ? MS took a great operating system called OS2(IBM) and buried it with Windows and MS market influence. Intel simply designs hardware now in the shadow of "Big Brother" MS.
In Conclusion:
ATI has what I feel is the best PR department in this industry and sorry Mr. Carvill yours is well unsatisfactory. Some advise to you and AMD Mr. Carvill don't smother that which ATI is known for and hindsight is 20/20 right
