AMD's Enthusiast Platform
Posted by Regeneration on June 2nd, 2006, 10:56 PM

Building on AMD’s already recognized leadership among PC enthusiasts, AMD also announced plans for a new enthusiast platform codenamed “4x4” that will extend AMD’s long-standing commitment to those consumers who demand the highest-performing PCs. The 4x4 platform features a four-core, multi-socket processor configuration uniquely possible via AMD’s Direct Connect Architecture. The 4X4 platform will be designed to be upgraded to eight total processor cores when AMD launches quad-core processors in 2007. Project 4x4 represents system-level enthusiast enhancements and is designed for ultimate multi-tasking performance across gaming, digital video, processor-intensive and heavily-threaded applications.

I can't help but think this is just an Attempt by AMD to get back a fraction of the "Mind Share" they've lost to Conroe. And it's kinda pathetic if you ask me. Why do I say this?

Well Intel is going to have quad core out in Q1 of 2007 for starters. So in essence AMD will only get "one upped " again before this new idea even gets off the ground. And it's not like "Dual Core GPUs" will suddenly become immediately available either. So even IF they do get this started with motherboards that support 2 Dual Cores, they may not immediately have the video cards to compliment them.

But overall, this whole idea is just "hype" designed for those Enthusiasts that have more money than sense. Because even though Win-XP can in fact provide support for up to 4 logical processors, there really isn't much software that is multi-threaded. So if the game you are playing can only use 1 core what's the point?

On a side note it seems likely that you'll also need a uber powersupply upgrade for this as well. Just think of how much juice 2 Dual Core CPUs And 2 Dual Core GPUs are gonna want! Maybe we should invest in PC Power & Cooling.
