Microsoft: Upgraded Motherboard = New Windows Licence
Posted by Regeneration on February 19th, 2006, 12:00 AM

Microsoft recently made a change to the licence agreement saying that a new motherboard is equal to a new computer, hence you need to purchase a new Windows licence. Here is what Microsoft has to say:

“An upgrade of the motherboard is considered to result in a “new personal computer” to which Microsoft® OEM operating system software cannot be transferred from another computer. If the motherboard is upgraded or replaced for reasons other than a defect, then a new computer has been created and the license of new operating system software is required.”

And they wonder why so many people are using warez version of Windows. Microsoft is an evil corporation and they are too greedy so they’re ripping their customers off. I wish that bad things will happen to this ugly corporation.

This will certainly make it easy for reviewers to remain legal while benching new boards.

This is about OEM version of windows, and MS policy on OEMs has always been something akin. If you buy full boxed version you can move it from board to board as many times as you wish (about that reviewers argument above).

It's not flaming, it's defending our rights.

mmh, you know what, I think maybe it's time for us to boycotting MS, then they would stop controlling what we can do with our system.
