Asus Extreme AX1800 XT TOP 2DHTV Video Card Review @ PC Perspective
Posted by Regeneration on January 23rd, 2006, 09:50 PM

Asus is never one to disappoint. They are consistently one of the first companies to adopt a new chipset or GPU technology, and more often than not, they deliver a great product in the process. They were the first with an nForce4 SLI X16 motherboard in the form of the A8N32-SLI and the first to offer dual 7800 GT GPUs on a single card in the N7800GT DUAL. Not only first, but a good first; that's hard to do.

That is one sweet, sweet card, and I would love to try it out for myself. But like many cards recently is it going to remain as one that made it to a few hand-picked reviewers but not to the public? From the "Pricing and Availability" section of the conclusion:

As of today, I haven't found the Asus AX1800 XT TOP in stock anywhere. I have seen a single listing for it on ZipZoomFly's site listed as on BackOrder. The price listed: $999! At that price, it is definitely hard to see this card as any kind of value; though to be fair Asus' initial pricing estimates were much lower. We'll have to wait for it to become in stock again at multiple outlets before we can fully judge the pricing on the Asus AX1800XT TOP package.

With the X1900 series looming on the horizon how many enthusiasts are going to want to spend that much money on a superceded card simply because it comes overclocked with King Kong and a USB Gamepad? People who buy high-end video cards can overclock the card themselves, King Kong the game has received generally poor reviews, and the gamepad might get used for a couple of sports games and then thrown into the bottom drawer never to be seen again.

It's a shame really, because the card itself performs absolutely fantastically in all games thrown at it. However I can just see Asus putting more time and effort into their X1900 line than the X1800 line.

I would still like one though
