Workers Protest in Foxconn Factory

Posted by Regeneration on April 28th, 2012, 07:42 AM

Workers at a Chinese factory owned by Foxconn, Apple's main manufacturer, threatened to jump off the roof of a building in a protest over wages just a month after the two firms announced a landmark agreement on improving working conditions.

The protest happened in the central city of Wuhan at one of Foxconn's plants. The company employ some 1.2 million workers in China assembling iPhones and iPads, among other products. It involved some 200 workers, the Hong-Kong based activist group Information Centre for Human Rights said.

A spokesman for Hon Hai Precision Industry, the listed unit of the Foxconn group, said the protest concerned workplace adjustments and involved workers new to the plant. He said it was not a strike.

"The dispute has already been settled after some negotiations involving the human resources and legal departments as well as the local government," the Taipei-based spokesman, Simon Tsing, said.

It would be fun if they jumped. Then anyone buying any Apple product will have the blood of miserable factory workers on their hands, instead of just their sweat.

I love how they state "Apple's main manufacturer", which actually makes the whole Foxconn atrocity sound smaller in scope than it actually is, with many more companies other than Apple going to the brutal Chinese sweatshops to get their shit manufactured as well. It's a lot like talking about the horrors of the Holocaust while at the same time sweeping Stalin's purges under the rug.

Except people aren't being killed by others in these factories, they're killing themselves. And Foxconn has a epidemic of it.

Which is why I said "a lot like" and not "exactly like". Also, missing the point.

It's not even close to "a lot". One was people being forced into concentration camps due to being of a certain background and slaughtered like cattle. The other is a completely voluntary job they chose where they some take their own lives.

Since when did voluntary workers commit suicide?

Sounds a bit more like "OK now you work for us, do so for x months, or we'll give your family big, big trouble" work.

That's just my guess, of course.

Work in bad conditions w/ little pay from a company that makes billions, or be jobless. The stress alone can make people snap.

Nope, still missing the point. This is your third and final chance to get it before you lose out on a cookie.

There is no point to what you said, it was insensitive and had no reason to be said. Two completely different situations.

Careful man. There's a cookie involved now. You may not want it, but I do.
