ATI Catalyst Vertical Stripes Hotfix for HD 5800 Series
Posted by Regeneration on February 5th, 2010, 11:19 PM

AMD has released a hotfix Catalyst driver to address the vertical stripes lockup issue (aka gray screen of death) that appears on some of the Radeon HD 5000 series. As reported before, the lockup happens mostly during 3D mode and is accompanied by gray vertical stripes appearing on the screen and looping sound. Unfortunately, this hotfix only supports the Radeon HD 5800 series. But according to OEM sources, the HD 5700 series should get the fix within a week as well. Remember folks, you heard about this issue first on NGOHQ.com.

No support for 5700s? Damn, I guess I'll adopt a cat now.

I posted a note in the other thread. XFX sent me a notice that the fix for the 57xx cards will come next week.

im seriously thinking this is a hardware fault.

From various sources I'm reading that it's something to do with the voltage regulation when switching between modes. I'd be happy to get a very conclusive determination on just what is causing it.

Aww those HD5000 series seemed so good... too bad... for ATi haha! i was planning to get a HD5600, i guess i should wait.

what exactly does it fix?
i'm guessing it's the fan.
the bios stock fan control settings will certainly overheat these cards in a hot environment. they are tweaked for silent operation but i have found they don't move air without further tweaking.

like i said before i've only seen this screen for a brief flash once but i have the fan set at 40%, i bet if i let the fan go on it's own accord i'd see it more...

I thought I answered this just two post previously. According to several sources they are saying that when the GPU switches between 2D and 3D modes, the VOLTAGE REGULATION is not making the proper adjustment.

When I've seen this happen, it's ALWAYS when the GPU is switching to 3D from 2D. So, if these articles are correct, the GPU isn't getting the proper voltage change needed to keep the signal going to the display. I have a hunch they are right about it. One reason I'm pretty sure is that I run my FAN at 60% constantly. So, I don't think it's a fan-related issue at all.

What is bothering me at this time is all the posts I'm reading saying that this particular FIX isn't working. If the "fix" is not working, then it's back to the drawing board for AMD/ATI. And, who knows how much longer it will take to actually fix the issue?

Same Problem on my new sapphire 4890.

I think i had that thing when I installed 10.1 driver.
I saw these gray jumpy dots all over the screen only in windows .
So I restarted the computer right away and on the next boot it was smooth, without any dots or what so ever.
And I didn't install the hotfix,just 10.1 driver.
P.s. Sapphire 4890 vapor-x

Had this grey stripes just yesterday on my HIS 5770. If the fix won't work or it won't be realesed this week i'll using RMA...

I had that problem with my 5770. I just increased the fan speed to 80% and updated the driver to 10.1 and haven't seen it since. I don't know which was the fix, but I suspect the fan speed was.

I finally solved the vertical stripes crashes by editing the bios with rbe. I raised idle gpu clock from 157 to 400, memory from 300 to 900 and idle voltage from 0.95 to 1.063. This means more consumption but the crashes disappeared just after flashing the new bios.

Still waiting for a permament fix for my 5870.
